Boruto: Naruto Next Generations 1×220 Review – “Remaining Time”

Boruto anime episode 220, ‘Remaining Time’, ended up being quite emotionally heavy as Naruto tried to find a way to protect Boruto from Momoshiki’s influence.

With Naruto recently losing Kurama and not being as strong as he once was, it made sense for the rest of the Kages to worry about Naruto’s ability to address the issue with Boruto’s ever-growing Karma Mark. Due to Momoshiki having taken over Boruto’s consciousness a couple of times now, the Kages were rightfully dreading it happening again and Momoshiki presenting himself as an Isshiki-level threat.

Gaara didn’t even hesitate to ask if Naruto had it in him to put a stop to Boruto before the situation grew worse. Gaara’s tone was harsh, but it was something Naruto needed to hear. Yes, he’s Boruto’s father, but he’s also got a duty to protect the Hidden Leaf Village and the rest of the world.

I liked how ‘Remaining Time’ focused on Naruto’s feelings as a parent and him trying to balance the roles of being a father and the Hokage. Naruto’s aware of the inevitable danger posed by Boruto’s Karma Mark. In a sense, killing Boruto right now would end a whole lot of trouble. But Naruto’s parental side wasn’t going to allow him to do so until completely necessary. He was going to do everything in his power to protect his child and find a way to stop the Otsutsukification process.

Naruto even stood his ground in front of Sasuke when the two talked about Boruto’s worsening condition. Sasuke had promised Boruto that he would kill him if Momoshiki took over his body. However, Sasuke failed to do so during their fight with Isshiki. Sasuke told Naruto he wasn’t going to make the same mistake again and that Naruto should face reality. According to Katasuke, Boruto only had a couple of weeks, or half a year, at best, before the completion of the Otsutsukification process. So, Naruto needed to make a decision soon.

One of the best moments in ‘Remaining Time’ occurred near the end of the episode with Naruto sitting down with Boruto for a little heart-to-heart. Even though Naruto’s aware he wasn’t as strong as before, he assured Boruto that he wasn’t going to lose hope. In Naruto’s opinion, parents were able to unleash tremendous amounts of power when their children were in danger. I think Naruto saying that linked to how Naruto’s parents were able to showcase a lot of power when protecting baby Naruto from the Nine-Tails decades ago.

Experiencing such type of support from his father, even though he’s running out of time, did a lot to ease Boruto’s mind. The poor kid’s been forcing himself to not fall asleep for days because he was afraid Momoshiki would take over his body.

With Naruto and Boruto talking things out regarding the Karma Mark, Amado stepped in with a possible solution. Turns out, he’s developed pills to suppress the Byakugan due to the Byakugan’s connection to the Otsutsiki Clan. Amado even gave the pills to Kawaki and that’s why Kawaki’s Otsutsikifictaion process was delayed. With Boruto willingly taking the pills, it will be interesting to see if any side effects do occur because, unlike Kawaki, Boruto’s got the potential to awaken the Byakugan due to his lineage.

‘Remaining Time’ also showed Mitsuki and Salad worrying about Boruto’s wellbeing. While worrying about your teammate makes sense, I’m still waiting for these two to play a bigger role in supporting Boruto instead of staying on the sidelines, especially in the manga. In contrast, Sumire’s putting in the work. She’s been helping Katasuke in the scientific research department and is ready to learn from Amado, too.

With next week’s episode focusing on the Chunin Exams, I’m ready for the Boruto anime to lighten up a bit.
