“Boruto: Two Blue Vortex” Manga Issue 37 Review: “Trust”

The Boruto Two Blue Vortex manga returned after a month-long hiatus with issue 37, titled ‘Trust’, to continue Boruto’s concern over Code kidnapping Salad.

Most people in the Boruto Two Blue Vortex fandom have been sharing their gripes about the manga’s pacing. Even though we get longer monthly issues compared to a weekly chapter release, there’s just something off with how the story unfolds. And I have to say that issue 37, ‘Trust’, served as yet another example when criticizing the pacing.

Even though I had been looking forward to seeing how Boruto would act after seemingly losing his only connection to Salad’s presence after Code abducted her, most of the latest chapter was filled with a whole lot of filler dialogue from a bunch of characters talking about how much Boruto cared about Salad. And I don’t know about you, but for me, none of that was actually necessary because we all know that Boruto deeply adored Salad and vice versa.

I actually found myself rolling my eyes as I continued to read the repetitive dialogue (from other people) about Boruto and Salad’s feelings for each other. The more I progressed through the chapter, the more I felt that the creative team was wasting time because they needed to reach the page count and ensure the chapter concluded at a specific cliffhanger. Sigh!

Coming to the rest of the issue, the title ‘Trust’ was basically about the amount of trust Boruto and Salad put into each other as ex-teammates and childhood friends. Even though the initial plan to drop Boruto’s markers inside Jura’s hideout failed, Salad knew Boruto would come looking for her as long as he had a way to reach her.

The major reveal in this chapter was how Salad had used Ohirume to yank away her earring for Boruto to find in Konoha while she was being teleported away from the village by Code. Fans had noticed Salad activate her MS in the previous issue. And though many of us had assumed Salad used some kind of Genjutsu on Code, I liked how Salad activating her MS served a purpose, even if the outcome was drastically different than the fan theory. Also, kudos to Salad for mastering her MS to such an extent that she could control what item (organic or inorganic) she wants Ohriume to pull away.

Another thing that I liked was Salad’s resolve to keep fighting, regardless of Boruto showing up to rescue her in time or not. As far as Salad was concerned, there’s no way she could escape Jura’s hideout on her own. So, as an experienced ninja, the go-to option was to defeat Code and Hidari together when the opportunity arose. I highly doubt those two foes would be defeated by her because, let’s be real, Boruto will teleport to Salad’s location soon. But still, having Salad ready to battle instead of feeling helpless served her character well.

As for Code getting into a fight with Hidari, their interaction kind of linked to the narrative theme of people acting irrationally when experiencing strong emotions. Similar to the rest of the Shinju Humanoids, Hidari’s need to consume Salad was so intense that he ignored Code’s plan to use Salad to bait Boruto. The bigger picture didn’t concern Hidari at all. He just needed Salad gone, even though he and Jura had been learning to experience more human-like emotions while interacting with each other and reading books in the hideout.

Code managed to stand his own against Hidari. But then again, I wouldn’t level up Code too much because Boruto and his team did manage to defeat Hidari previously, down to his Thorn Bulb. So, I’m still unsure about how strong Hidari’s supposed to be.

Talking about the stuff occurring in Konoha, Kashin Koji wasn’t a fan of Boruto wanting to go after Salad. Apparantly, Boruto rescuing Salad was possible. However, there was a catch. Due to the visions of the possible futures that Kashin Koji had seen, the risk of Momoshiki taking over Boruto’s consciousness had drastically increased. The takeover would require certain factors to come into play, and apparantly, the need for power to save Salad was one such factor. According to Kashin Koji, Momoshiki controlling Boruto would be the worst outcome of all.

Understandably, Kashin Koji didn’t relay any of that information to Boruto. But I think it’s safe to assume that Boruto’s smart enough to connect the dots. Then again, referring to the narrative theme, humans making “irrational” decisions was natural. Boruto wasn’t going to do nothing while Salad stayed inside Jura’s hideout.

With Boruto getting ready to use Salad’s earring to track her location, it’s only a matter of time before he would teleport to her. There was nothing Kashin Koji could do to stop Boruto. That’s why it made sense for Kashin Koji and Shikamaru to turn their attention to ensuring Jura didn’t return to the hideout while Boruto was also there.

The task of keeping Jura occupied falling on a regular shopkeeper named Furuta made me chuckle. At this point, a freaking shopkeeper’s been given an important mission to save the world compared to poor Mitsuki’s role in the story. I just have to laugh.

Furuta mentioned that Jura should invite his “friend” Hidari to a cat cafe to understand why Hidari found cats to be so cute. Even though things have grown intense between Hidari, Code, Salad, and Boruto, I’m here for the next chapter breaking away from the upcoming battle to show Furuta accompanying Jura to the cat cafe and Jura getting to interact with a bunch of adorable cats without Furuta letting slip he had been ordered to keep Jura occupied inside Konoha.

I mean, come on. We can all agree that Boruto Two Blue Vortex isn’t the most well-written manga out there. It already has pacing issues. So, why not give us Jura playing with cats, right?

Matters escalated for Shikamaru, with the chapter concluding on a cliffhanger with another summon from Lord Kobu for Shikamaru to appear for yet another interrogation because Nishi, of all people, had decided to testify against Shikamaru. Ugh! I need Lord Kobu gone!

The addition of Lord Kobu served no purpose, in my opinion, other than inorganically trying to raise the stakes and finding an excuse to sideline Shikamaru when necessary.
