Netflix announced today that they have optioned the rights for BRZRKR, a BOOM! Studios comic book created by Keanu Reeves, written by Reeves and New York Times bestelling author Matt Kindt, illustrated by famed Marvel artist Ron Garney with colors by Bill Crabtree, letters by Clem Robins, and character designs and covers by Rafael Grampá.

BRZRKR, a 12-issue limited series published by BOOM! Studios, originated from an original idea by Reeves, who had been developing it for a number of years. It launched on March 3, 2021. The inaugural issue has already sold over 615,000 copies, making it the highest-selling launch in almost 30 years.

BRZRKR is a brutally epic saga about an immortal warrior’s 80,000 year fight through the ages. The man known only as “B” is half-mortal and half-god, , cursed and compelled to violence… even at the sacrifice of his sanity. But after wandering the earth for centuries, B may have finally found a refuge – working for the U.S. government to fight the battles too violent and too dangerous for anyone else. In exchange, B will be granted the one thing he desires – the truth about his endless blood-soaked existence…and how to end it.

Netflix revealed their plans to not only produce a live-action feature film (starring Reeves, naturally), but also to develop an anime spinoff series, with Reeves reprising his role and voicing his character. The anime will expand the universe by exploring different elements of the established story.

As for the film, Keanu Reeves will produce, along with Ross Richie and Stephen Christy for BOOM! Studios and Stephen Hamel for Company Films. Adam Yoelin for BOOM! Studios will serve as executive producer.

BOOM! Studios has a first-look deal for both live-action and animated content with Netflix, so this deal will not be the last time we see adaptations from their titles. Farid already has some opinions on what they should develop next!
