Bucky Barnes: The Winter Soldier #1 Review

b1

If I were to use one word to describe the new Bucky Barnes: The Winter Soldier book it would be BEAUTIFUL. The first thing that grabs you is Marco Rudy’s art. It is unlike any book I have ever seen and I am smitten. Honestly, it feels so hypnagogic that one would think it better belong to a Doctor Strange title than one reserved for a story involving Bucky and Daisy Johnson aka “Quake”. Yet, it works and is stunning.

The story follows the pair as they travel to the outer reaches of space in order to assassinate the ruler of the planet Syro, which poses an imminent threat that might jeopardise Earth. We are then thrust backwards to the Marianas Trench and the underwater kingdom of Namor, which is on “Fury’s to do list”. From there we are name checked by Loki as the “middle man” in the kerfuffle, and are set up for Asgard in the next issue.

To be honest, I never would have thought something like this would have ever worked, not only character-wise, but also story and art. It is most likely due to the new breed of comics that Marvel has been producing, but also to their cinematic side (with the success of Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy).

For those who have read my reviews previously, you know that I am slowly creeping my way back into the Marvel Comics world. I read this book as a throwaway, as it was debuting today, but I am honestly interested in seeing where it goes. Ales Kot has produced something interesting in regard to the storyline, and the aforementioned Rudy has captivated me to no end. I would definitely recommend you pick this up if you haven’t already.
