captain marvel box office second weekend

Disney/Marvel’s Captain Marvel was able to hold the top position at the US box office in its second weekend. The Carol Danvers film has gone on to cross $760 million at the worldwide box office and is on its way to passing the $1 billion mark.

There are no doubts Captain Marvel (a film introducing a new character) is a success for the MCU. The movie has been able to gross more than $750 million at the global box office in only 12 days of worldwide release.

It went on to deliver an estimated $69.3 million during the second weekend with only a 54.8% drop at the domestic box office. These numbers go to show Captain Marvel’s solo outing was able to maintain audience interest after its March 8, 2019, debut. The domestic haul is currently over $266 million.

Overseas, the film debuted at the top in Japan with an estimated $5.6 million. China seems to love Carol Danvers. The country has reported earnings of $132 million. South Korea followed with $36.5 million, the UK coming in with $30.9 million, Brazil with $24.3 million, and Mexico reporting $22.4 million.

In third place, Lionsgate’s release of CBS Films’ Five Feet Apart also managed to outperform expectations with an estimated $13.1 million opening weekend from 3,727 theaters and an “A” CinemaScore which should help with word of mouth.

Coming to holdovers, Universal’s release of DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World was at number four. The domestic box office for this film is over $135 million with the global gross being more than $466 million.

Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral was at number five with the domestic total being close to $60 million.

Next weekend we will get to see how Jordan Peel’s Us performs by opening in more than 3,600 theaters. It has received rave reviews.
