Chalk Another One Up for Nostalgia: Independence Day Resurgence Looks Awesome

Independence Day Resurgence

I keep telling myself that I’m not going to jump on these nostalgia bandwagons, but to be honest, most times I fail. And Independence Day: Resurgence is one of those times.

The first trailer was just released, and even without Will Smith (shoot, maybe because of his absence), so far this movie appears to have all the makings of an amazing sequel.

Independence Day Jeff GoldblumEarlier this year, Cinema Blend reported that it seemed as if Will Smith wouldn’t be involved (despite seeming interested earlier on) because post-After Earth he wasn’t all that into the idea of “a science-fiction story structured around a father-son duo on an adventure”. To each his own, I guess, because personally I feel like Jeff Goldblum – and Bill Pullman, to an extent – were the real stars of the original Independence Day. And they’re both back – along with Judd Hirsch, Brent Spiner, and even Vivica A. Fox. Some of the characters who reappear have been recast, though – sadly, Mae Whitman won’t be playing Patricia Whitmore (Bill Pullman’s character President Whitmore’s daughter). Personally I’m hoping that this is because she chose not to be involved, and the fact that they also recast Dylan Hiller makes me feel a little better.

Maybe I remember it wrong (though I don’t think I do), but to me the best way to describe Independence Day would be “campy”. It’s amusing at times, maybe a bit dark at times, but overall a summer blockbuster not meant to be taken too seriously. And I’m okay with that – I love it for what it is. On the other hand, the trailer for Independence Day: Resurgence feels pretty serious. Gritty, even. But the best part is probably that the premise also sounds believable; even if I’d never seen the original, I think the trailer for the sequel would intrigue me enough to want to go see it.

But mostly I’ll go see it for Jeff Goldblum.

Check out the first trailer for Independence Day: Resurgence below. I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait for its release next summer!
