“Charlie’s Angels” Official Trailer Reminded Me of Netflix & Totally Spies!

The official trailer for the ‘kind-of-but-not-really-a-reboot?’ Charlie’s Angels film has been released. While I hope this movie is able to do well at the box office, the trailer made me go ‘meh!’

One of the reasons I’m not fully sold on continuing the Charlie’s Angels franchise like this is because things don’t usually work out for movies without the original cast. Sony’s most recent example is Men in Black: International which didn’t do well at the box office. The MIB franchise is linked to Will Smith, and I do think not having him in the movie caused harm.

I have the same feeling about the upcoming Charlie’s Angels installment. Instead of fully rebooting the entire thing, Sony is treating it as a continuation (similar to MIB: International) which, in my opinion, doesn’t work on multiple levels.

First of all, if the latest film doesn’t have cameos from Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, and Lucy Liu, then what was even the point? A studio can’t expect fans to accept a so-called continuation without bringing back the original cast in some capacity. Again, look at what happened to MIB.

Also, I’m not really sure if I like the idea of the ‘Charlie’s Angels’ being a massive international organization instead of the core three traveling around the world to complete dangerous missions.

Anyway, here’s the trailer!

I don’t know about you, but I didn’t like the trailer (which is supposed to promote the film) emphasizing how the movie will feature a new single from Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus, and Lana Del Rey. Let the movie stand on its own.

I’m also disappointed they didn’t go with a darker skinned actress as one of the Angels, especially when Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong’o was in the running to join this project.

I’m kind of on the fence about this movie. Perhaps the trailer wasn’t good and the film will be much different?

It made me think about how awesome such a story would be for a Netflix film or streaming series. I mean, it’s not my fault the studio decided to cast Netflix talent. This film should have gone for Tom Holland or someone else with blockbuster-level caliber instead of Noah Centineo.

Here is my review of the trailer!

The official description reads:

In Elizabeth Banks’ bold vision, Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, and Ella Balinska are working for the mysterious Charles Townsend, whose security and investigative agency has expanded internationally. With the world’s smartest, bravest, and most highly trained women all over the globe, there are now teams of Angels guided by multiple Bosleys taking on the toughest jobs everywhere. The screenplay is by Elizabeth Banks from a story by Evan Spiliotopoulos and David Auburn.

Also, the young-looking cast made me think such a premise would work great as a Totally Spies live-action film. Sigh!

All I can say is Kristen Stewart looks amazing. I hope her character is queer.

Directed by Elizabeth Banks, Charlie’s Angels is scheduled for a November 15, 2019, release in the US.
