With the final season of The CW’s Arrow quickly approaching, it has been revealed that Colton Haynes will not be back to reprise his character of Roy Harper (Arsenal).

As sad as it is, Arrow is officially coming to an end with its final season set to premiere later this year. Unfortunately, it does seem as though the show will bow out without some of its fan-favorite characters being able to say goodbye. Just earlier this year, it was revealed that Emily Bett Rickards (Felicity Smoak) would not be back for the final season, which came as a great shock to fans considering the fact that Felicity Smoak has been a staple character of the show since it premiered in 2012.

Now, it has just been announced via TV Line that Colton Haynes will not be back to reprise his character of Roy Harper. Colton’s character was introduced during the first season of Arrow and stuck around as a series regular through the third season before leaving. He continued to be frequently mentioned in passing by the rest of the characters from the show, all the way up through season 6, before his character was brought back in a series of flashfowards throughout season seven.

According to Colton Haynes, as posted on his twitter account, the decision to not return for the show’s final season was not one of his own making. This is puzzling, not only because Colton has played a character importantly connected to the overall series, but because he returned as an older version of Roy Harper during last season of the show, set in a story-line that was based out of the city of Star City in the year 2040.

Personally, I’m hopeful that Colton is correct in the idea that Roy Harper is never gone for too long. Despite the fact that Arrow is ending, there is always a possibility that the character could return in some kind of capacity. We’ve seen a whole slew of “alternate-Earth” versions of our favorite characters, so maybe we’ll get an alternate version of Roy Harper sometime in the future, on another show.

Maybe Roy will follow in the footsteps of Sara Lance, Ray Palmer, Vixen, and Constantine, all of which were characters that first made their Arrowverse appearance on Arrow, before hopping aboard the Waverider for Legends of Tomorrow. After all, the last time we really saw Roy Harper was during the Star City 2040 story-line in Arrow’s seventh season. It wouldn’t be hard for the Legends to pick up an older version of Roy.

Arrow returns for its eighth and final season on October 15th, 2019.

  1. I thought Arrow finished years ago. I watched a few episodes but could never really get into it.
