The world’s most diverse manga comics brand, Saturday AM, is once again holding its annual global art tournament, March Art Madness 2020. This year’s event promises to reach epic proportions as they celebrate their fifth year.

Founded and hosted by the artists and staff behind Saturday and their sister magazines Saturday PM and Fanart Friday, the competition is inspired by sporting events like the World Cup.

Each week a new round begins where two artists compete to create the best art based on a theme from current pop culture topics: superheroes, anime, video games, and more. Popular social media platforms are full of talented artists but this event tests an illustrator’s ability to draw different subjects and to create on a deadline.

The event attracts artists from around the world–previous winners have come from the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, and Sweden!

“We are very excited for this year’s MARCH ART MADNESS as it’s another milestone for Saturday AM’s commitment to the discovery, development, and distribution of DIVERSE NEW ARTISTIC TALENT,” said founder and publisher, Frederick L. Jones. “In the past, we’ve had such amazing entries from women and I wonder if this year will be the year one wins it all?”

Registration for March Art Madness 2020 begins on 2/20/2020 on the Saturday AM website with additional details in issue #2 of their Fanart Friday magazine. Hurry! Registration closes on 2/28/2020.

Once 64 artists are selected, the tournament will begin on March 9th and run until April 11th. Each Monday, artists will be given a new theme with which to create their piece and will have until that Friday to submit. Any art tools (i.e. digital, ink, markers, etc) are acceptable. Participants MUST be over the age of 16.

An all-star panel of judges who will critique and score each round will be announced on 3/1/2020. Voting is open for non-contestants and participating artists are encouraged to promote their work to friends, family, and countrymen to increase their popular vote totals. At the end of each week, the artist with the least amount of votes is eliminated and the remaining artists are matched against each other.

For the 5th year in a row, the grand prize of the contest is an Apple iPad and Apple Pencil. Popular art supplies manufacturer Spectrum Noir will sponsor the event by giving away a complete set of over 200 quality alcohol-based art markers.

Smaller prizes will also be awarded to artists who make something memorable, so you don’t have to be the last artist standing in order to have a chance at winning a prize!

There are more surprises for the tournament’s prize package that Saturday AM will announce soon. For more information and to register, click here to download the Saturday AM app. Then be sure to read issue #2 of Fanart Friday, where the official registration will be located.

Keep an eye on our Saturday AM tag–more announcements coming soon!
