Crazy Rich Asians Wins Labor Day Weekend! Tops the U.S. Box Office Third Time in a Row

Crazy Rich Asians box office labor day

There is no stopping Crazy Rich Asians and I’m here for it making as much money as possible. Released by Warner Bros. Pictures, and starring Constance Wu and Henry Golding, the rom-com has been able to maintain the top spot at the U.S. box office for three weeks in a row!

Crazy Rich Asians won the Labor Day weekend with $28 million and only a 10% drop compared to the performance it showed last weekend. The domestic gross for the flick currently stands a bit more than $117 million against a production budget of $30 million. The foreign gross is close to $20 million.

Breaking down the foreign markets, Australia helped Crazy Rich Asians have a $5.4 million opening, making it the largest opening for a rom-com in that market. Singapore helped add $3.4 million, Philippines added $2.8 million, Malaysia brought $1.4 million, and Taiwan with $1.1 million. The film will open in the UK on September 14, 2018. A sequel is also planned.

The Meg, another film with an Asian cast, came in at second place with $13.4 million to make the worldwide gross hit more than $465 million. The top market for Jason Statham’s latest movie (which I enjoyed) has been China where the giant shark chopped down on more than $150 million. It will swim to Japan’s box office this Friday.

Tom Cruise’s Mission Impossible: Fallout was able to make $9.1 million and secure itself in third place. The latest entry in the Mission Impossible franchise has now made north of $649 million globally.

MGM’s Operation Finale was fourth at the box office with $7.8 million. Sony’s Searching expanded this week and generated $7.7 million.

In related news, Disney/Pixar’s Incredibles 2 became the ninth film ever to top the $600 million mark domestically. I need a third film in the franchise right now!

Next weekend audiences will return to the world of The Conjuring with The Nun. While I don’t find The Conjuring series to be scary, I am interested in knowing more about the cinematic world it has created.

STX will also be releasing Peppermint starring Jennifer Garner.
