Creator and storyteller Amarilis Rodriguez advocates for more BIPOC voices and narratives in the television and film industry. Her efforts in raising awareness of racial inequality in the media, along with her tremendous creativity and talent, deserve notice.

Amarilis Rodriguez, an afro-indigenous Puerto Rican born in Chicago and currently living in LA, has a Bachelor’s in Apparel and Textiles from the University of Northern Iowa, an MBA from Kaplan University, and an MFA in film production from Full Sail University. Her credits include having worked on the upcoming Amazon Prime film Without Remorse (assistant), being an office production assistant for HBO (for season 10 of Curb Your Enthusiasm), and an art assistant for Universal Studios (for the film Night School). Her feature scripts, Damas Alliance and Populace, explore dystopic futures and interpersonal relationships.

I have admired her efforts in pointing out antiblackness and colorism in the media since I started following her last year. She’s a force to be reckoned with, and her advocating for BIPOC writers and filmmakers shouldn’t go unnoticed. Rodriguez has recently started a list of BIPOC SFF (sci-fi and fantasy) writers with loglines of their projects (via Google Sheets), which is pinned on her Twitter. People from various backgrounds, ethnicities, and experiences have contributed to it. So many fantastic ideas from promising writers!

Her artwork features BIPOC celebrities and public figures, photos of flowers and places, videos, and costume design. Her versatile style and level of detail are impressive. Her mixed media pieces include abstract backgrounds and effects. I’m excited to see where she goes with her work.

You can check out her art and mixed media work on her site, and visit her Redbubble store. Also, check out her list of BIPOC writers. If you’re a BIPOC SFF screenwriter or novelist, or know someone who is, please contact Rodriguez to be added!
