Manga artist Tani Andrews (also known as Kuroitani) creates character-driven stories about self-love and mental health. Her manga, Seeds of Doubt, debuts in May 2022 at Momocon. She’s also the creator of the webcomic Strike L, which is available to read on WebToon. Her impressive art and storytelling have high potential. She’s definitely one to watch.

Based in Atlanta, Georgia, Tani is a self-taught artist, having graduated from Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) with an MFA in sequential art/manga (2019). She applies the foundations of art, branching out to various mediums and styles, into her work. Her manga project, Seeds of Doubts, is a coming of age story. According to Tani’s Twitter account for the project, Seeds of Doubt follows the story of one boy in the spotlight and another boy in the shadows. The two form a bond that helps them overcome anxiety and fear. Tani has also created an online manga based on the music video for K-pop band BTS’s Lights. Her webcomic Strike L, available on WebToon, demonstrates Tani’s prowess as a storyteller.

Strike L by Tani Andrews (Kuroitani)

Strike L centers on the narrative of a teenage girl named Reya who questions her self-worth. The story starts with her wondering how she feels about relationships after rejecting a classmate. She just can’t imagine herself being someone’s date or partner. Then a humanoid alien crash lands in Atlantic Station. Once Reyna and the alien break the language barrier between them, Reyna starts to develop feelings for him.

Although the webcomic is still on hiatus as of November 2020, the first five episodes contain emotional moments between the characters that I’m left with no choice but to patiently wait for future updates.
