The teaser trailer for The Curse of La Llorona has been released, and it looks like quite a scary film. Produced by James Wan, the upcoming movie does seem to share a connection with the highly successful The Conjuring franchise. Also, we all knew it was only a matter of time before Velma encountered an actual evil ghost.

The Curse of La Llorona, as the name states, will be dealing with the Mexican folklore of La Llorona or The Weeping Woman. It is about a ghost stuck between the planes of the living and the dead as she continues to search for her children (whom she drowned). It will be very interesting to see how a live-action Hollywood film brings such a story to the big screen.

Check out the teaser trailer!

You can see a number of traditional scare tactics being used in the teaser, but you know what? They seem to be working very well. So, I’m here for all of them!

As for Linda Cardellini ( Velma in Scooby-Doo) being the female lead, I can understand some of the comments about how the movie should have cast a Latinx actress. However, with The Curse of La Llorona having a Latinx director (Michael Chaves) and Latinx cast members, I’m going to hold onto my opinions until I have watched the film. (Update October 21, 2018: A correction. The director is Portuguese-American. Thanks to @LatinIntros for letting us know).

Would I have liked a Latinx actress being the lead in a film, set in 1973 Los Angeles, about scary Mexican folklore? Of course. But let’s see what director Chaves does with the material.

Furthermore, while not being promoted as such, there seems to be a connection between The Curse of La Llorona and The Conjuring franchise. Actor Tony Amendola will be playing Father Perez (according to his Wiki page) in the upcoming film. Fans of Annabelle might remember him in the same role in the 2014 movie.

Chaves has been signed on to direct The Conjuring 3. So, we might get to see some plotlines in The Curse of La Llorona which connect to the third installment in The Conjuring film series? I’m very excited!

The Curse of La Llorona is looking at an April 19, 2019, theatrical release date.
