Death’s Head Issue 1 Review: The Bo(d)y In Question

Even if you don’t know anything about the titular character, writer Tini Howard does an impressive job of making Death’s Head Issue 1 one of the better comic books currently available by mixing action, existential crises, and a lot of comedy.

The current miniseries is about a character named Death’s Head who is a bounty-hunting robot. Things don’t go well with his employer Yondu (Guardians of the Galaxy), and Death’s Head is thrown like trash all the way to Earth. This is where, after regaining consciousness (he was out for a bit more than two weeks), Head finds himself in front of Wiccan and Hulkling.

Almost every panel has a comedic element to it. I liked artist Kei Zama’s overexaggerated facial expressions. Zama did a wonderful job of ensuring that Head is able to emote even though his mouth doesn’t move. Felipe Sobreiro’s colors go well with Zama’s artistic style.

As far as the more serious themes are concerned, Wiccan hasn’t been feeling well. I don’t know what happened between the time we saw him during War of the Realms and the current timeline. The young Demiurge has a sense of inadequacy that he’s (poorly) trying to manage.

While I’m glad he and Hulkling haven’t broken up, I didn’t like seeing Billy being unsure about his place in the superhero world. He’s trying to find a purpose and I hope he finds it by the end of this four-issue arc. I wonder if this mini-story will lead into what Tini Howard has planned for Wiccan in the upcoming Strikeforce comic book series.

From what I can tell, Billy has been trying to control the future to reach a certain outcome. We all know playing with reality never goes as planned. So, let’s see what explanation Billy offers for his decisions.

With both Head and Wiccan trying to make sense of their lives, I’m looking forward to reading about the lessons they’ll learn from each other.

If you’re a Wiccan and Billy fan, and if you want an easy-to-read comic book story that’s full of comedy and boasts an engaging storyline, I recommend you pick a copy of Death’s Head Issue 1 (titled ‘The Bo(d)y in Question’). You’ll not be disappointed.
