Boruto: Naruto Next Generations 1×13 Review: The Demon Beast Appears

Boruto review The Demon Beast Appears review sumire

This week’s episode of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations finally revealed the culprit behind the ghost attacks. “The Demon Beast Appears” also had some nice action sequences.

While the show has been leaving hints about Sumire being the current antagonist, I didn’t want it to be her. But “The Demon Beast Appears” cemented the fact that Boruto’s Class Rep was indeed behind the attacks. I guess I wanted the show to surprise me. I was hoping it would make me think it was Sumire and reveal someone else to be the main villain instead.

Anyway, Mitsuki figured out it was Sumire during the post office battle. He didn’t go to the authorities. Instead, he told Boruto about Sumire because he wanted to see Boruto’s reaction. Mitsuki shares some unique connection with the young protagonist. It seems that he will learn about human interaction and empathy through Boruto.

While Sumire’s backstory wasn’t interesting, I liked how the writers explained Nue. The summoned creature absorbed chakra and was capable of exploding. It was a weapon that Sumire’s father created for Danzo. While we didn’t get to see it explode, we did get Sai and Kakashi working together to contain the monster.

Turns out that Kakashi had been investigating the Nue on his own. I liked the conversation he had with Naruto and Shikamaru about letting such a thing happen under their noses. After the Fouth Great Ninja War people (especially members of Danzo’s team) weren’t being policed as before. This led to Sumire more or less slipping through the paperwork and initiating the attacks.

I was looking forward to an amazing battle with the beast. But it ended up teleporting, taking Sumire, Boruto, and Mitsuki to another dimension. I get that this is a Boruto-centric anime series. However, it wouldn’t hurt if the writers showed the adults taking care of a threat.

The entire arc seems to be about Boruto teaching Mitsuki that one should try and save everyone. For Boruto, there isn’t an option of letting someone die to ensure another person lives. While such morals are admirable, I hope the writers teach Boruto that sometimes you can’t save everyone. Naruto learned his lesson during his story. So, maybe Boruto will learn it, too. Also, what’s up with the electricity coming out of Boruto’s eye? Maybe it’s a hint that he has a lightning nature like Sasuke. It could also be the reason why Nue teleported. I feel confused.

What did you think “The Deamon Beast Appears”? Are you looking forward to the next episode? Let me know.
