Dinosaur-Shaped Nuggets and Tantrums: An Interview with George Gant, the Creator of the Webcomic “Beware of Toddler”
Raising a child, even a toddler, is a blessing that also comes with messes and other mishaps. George Gant, the creator of the episodic webcomic Beware of Toddler, shares his inspiration behind this adorable comic.
Beware of Toddler has got to be one of the sweetest and comical slice of life webcomics I’ve ever come across. It shows the joys and stresses of raising a toddler while balancing work and other obligations. This webcomic contains hilarious moments like literally mailing a hot dog for the hungry kids, jamming several DVDs into the player, and playing with dinosaur-shaped chicken nuggets.
It’s my pleasure to have George Gant here to talk about his webcomic and more.
The Geekiary: Thank you for being here. So excited! Let’s start by introducing yourself!
George Gant: Hi! My name is George and I’m the creator of the (now Ringo award-nominated) webcomic Beware of Toddler.
TG: I adore your episodic webcomic Beware of Toddler. It’s cute, funny, and to the point. I’d love to know how the idea for it came about.
George: Thank you! Shortly after my daughter was born, I was messing around my tablet when I sketched a baby that *sort of* looked like her, holding a bazooka. I never finished the sketch or anything and it didn’t really go anywhere.
About a year later, I was playing hide-and-seek with her. Despite hiding in a closet, she immediately found me. I thought that was hilarious and for fun, I drew up a quick comic, just to see how people would react to it. To my surprise, people liked it a lot so I just kept drawing them.
One day I’ll finish that bazooka drawing.
TG: What is your creative process?
George: I’m not sure I have one, to be honest. I rarely have the time to sit down and write things out, as much as I want to. I usually approach each comic with a specific idea in mind and lay it out in my head. I’ll refine my idea as I’m penciling, but often I’ll just throw out that idea and come up with something on the spot as I’m drawing it. Other than that, standard pencils then inks then colors then letters.
TG: What are your favorite movies, TV shows, books, etc.? Anything that inspired Beware of Toddler?
George: I was and am still a big fan of The Simpsons and have been influenced by that, along with Calvin and Hobbes and The Boondocks. My favorite show right now has to be Rick and Morty, though.
TG: Besides Beware of Toddler, are you working or planning on anything else?
George: Quite a bit, actually. Yes–I have two other comic strips actually. One of them, The Reset Button, is an all-ages gaming comic I’ve worked on in some form since 2006. I am working on a graphic novel based on that webcomic. I have another comic, titled On the Grind, that I would like to produce another book collection on. I also draw a weekly comic strip for The Beano called Angel Face Investigates, as well as letter multiple different books.
I do want to point out that I am finishing up a Beware of Toddler book collection with the hopes of launching a Kickstarter campaign soon.
