The official trailer for Downton Abbey 2: A New Era has been released. It features certain plot developments I wasn’t expecting- and yes, we now know who Thomas Barrow’s possible new love interest is going to be.

As a fan of the long-running Downton Abbey franchise, I can’t wait to watch the upcoming sequel. The main OG cast is coming back along with a bunch of new faces. Judging from the trailer, there seem to be a handful of plotlines that viewers will get to enjoy.

The big mystery in A New Era features Violet Crawley (Dame Maggie Smith) being the owner of a villa in the South of France. Some of the Crawley family members take a trip to said villa to figure out why the previous owner gave the property to the Dowager Countess.

Back at home, a new character named Mr. Barber (Hugh Dancy) plans to shoot a movie at Downton and the residents of the house, including the downstairs staff, are quite excited. Of course, the old guard (Violet and Mr. Carson) aren’t so enthused. And I’m not sure, but it looks like Mary (Michelle Dockery) being Mary decides to become involved in Mr. Barber’s filmmaking process. I guess Mary’s enthusiasm isn’t received well by the film’s lead actress (played by Laura Haddock)?

Newlyweds Branson (Allan Leech) and Lucy (Tuppence Middleton) seem to be experiencing some relationship trouble. And Thomas… well, Thomas (Robert James-Collier) got another love interest!

Ever since the cast for this movie was announced, I had my fingers crossed that Dancy’s character would serve as a love interest for Thomas. But alas, that wasn’t to be. According to the trailer, Dominic West‘s character is the one flirting with Thomas.

I’m not sure how I feel about Thomas getting another potential boyfriend who will likely leave by the end of the film. The first Downton Abbey movie had Thomas grow close to Richard Ellis (Max Brown), but Richard had to leave. Unfortunately, Brown won’t be coming back as Richard in the upcoming sequel.

With Domonic West’s character being a movie actor, I highly doubt he will decide to stay at Downton. Perhaps he will ask Thomas to come with him and travel the world? Hmmm.

My headcanon involves Thomas falling in love with a local produce guy who brings him flowers and fruit as gifts whenever he makes daily deliveries to Downton. But oh well. Let’s see what’s in the cards as far as Thomas’s love life is concerned.

Here’s the official trailer!

And for those interested, here’s my reaction!

With the original December 22, 2021, release date getting delayed, Downton Abbey 2: A New Era is currently scheduled to debut on April 29, 2022, in the UK and on May 20, 2022, in the US and Canada.

I can’t wait to watch it!

The film has been directed by Simon Curtis and written by Julian Fellowes. For those who might now know, Fellowes has a new show called The Gilded Age. It’s set in, as the name states, the Gilded Age of the US.

I’m covering The Gilded Age through reaction videos over at The Geekiary’s YouTube channel. It’s different from Downton Abbey, but still a lot of fun (and yes, it has queer representation).

Premiering on HBO on January 24, 2022, and having aired four episodes, The Gilded Age has already been renewed for a second season. So, yeah, get into it!
