Dragonwatch Book 2 Wrath of the Dragon King Review

I have to be honest, I don’t know a lot about the Fabelhaven book series by author Brandon Mull. However, I still found myself enjoying Dragonwatch Book 2: Wrath of the Dragon King.

I was provided a free copy of Dragonwatch Book 2: Wrath of the Dragon King for review. The opinions are my own.

From what I could grasp from Wikipedia, the first book in the Fabelhaven series was released back in 2006. It introduced the main characters, Kendra and Seth, as well let us know about a magical world they have many adventures in.

The Dragonwatch series is a sequel to the original Fabelhaven books with grown-up versions of Kendra and Seth. If you like fantasy and magic, I do think you will enjoy reading Wrath of the Dragon King and perhaps even be interested in picking up the previous books.

The story in Wrath of the Dragon King primarily takes place at Wrymroost, which is one of the Dragon Sanctuaries. It also happens to be a very intense magical preserve and darker than Fabelhaven. I liked how the main characters were aged up a bit so they could better handle the situations they find themselves in.

Kendra is an interesting character. Again, I don’t know how she was as a child in the original series or how she has grown over the course of the series, but I found her to be quite well-written. The same goes for Seth. He is quite a humorous guy, though he could come across as a bit immature at times.

I like seeing siblings working together, and there was a lot of that in this book. Kendra and Seth’s cousins Knox and Tessa are also part of the narrative.

The lead siblings are experienced characters, but the story still found ways to raise the stakes which helped keep things interesting.

Here’s the official synopsis:

The dragons have declared war on humans. Two of the seven dragon sanctuaries have already fallen. Will Wyrmroost be next?

After a humiliating defeat at the hands of Kendra and Seth, Celebrant, King of Dragons, prepares to unleash his fury and take control of his native preserve. Armed with information from a new ally—Ronodin, the dark unicorn—Celebrant seeks a legendary talisman—the wizenstone.

However, the powerful stone is protected by a cursed castle. Can Kendra and Seth foil Celebrant’s plan and beat him to his prize? Will the two young caretakers rally enough support from the creatures of Wyrmroost against the greatest threat the magical community has faced in ages? One thing is for certain. Dragons are wicked smart. It will take more than Kendra, Seth, and their current allies to outwit and outmatch the wrath of the Dragon King.

Brandon Mull has done a good job with the world building. I was able to understand the overall politics and how different creatures interacted with each other, even though Wrath of the Dragon King was the first book I read from the entire series.

As for the pacing, I did feel the beginning half was a bit slow, but things did pick up speed from there, especially as the story neared its end.

There is also quite a lot of unexplored stuff to warrant a sequel. I want to know what will happen to Seth after the surprising decision he made. I want to know more about Agad, too.

If you are into fantasy and magical creatures, I recommend you pick up a copy of Dragonwatch 2: Wrath of the Dragon King.

Currently available, I give this book 4 out of 5 stars.
