The highly-enjoyable DuckTales reboot on Disney XD finally (and properly) introduced viewers to Violet’s two dads during the DuckTales Season 3 Premiere. And it seems series co-developer Francisco Angones has plans to explore more LGBTQ+ narratives.

The DuckTales season 3 premiere aired on the network on April 4, 2020. And yes, I know I’m a bit late in reporting this. I enjoy binge-watching the DuckTales animated series, so I was waiting for a couple more episodes to air. And yes, I realize that was a mistake. Anyway, I had to share this development with you.

The episode, titled ‘Challenge of the Senior Junior Woodchucks!’, was about Huey and Violet competing in a challenge to earn the title of Senior Woodchuck. After winning the title (due to her saving Huey’s life), Violet’s two dads celebrated her victory.

Now, we all know that certain viewers refuse to acknowledge the existence of queer characters in the media they consume. It’s one of the reasons there are numerous jokes about how queer characters are often misinterpreted as being ‘just’ friends.

That’s why I couldn’t help but laugh at how the DuckTales team made sure there was no (deliberate) confusion with Violet’s fathers. The animation team had the two wear t-shirts to make their relationship very clear. Lena (Violet’s friend) also had a funny line about the queer characters and their relationship.

Violet did mention having two fathers back in season 2 (if I remember correctly). So, it was nice to see them properly onscreen.

Also, Angones seems to understand the importance of having well-written queer representation in media. According to a Tumblr post from November 13, 2019, Angones wrote:

I’m quite impressed by his take. I wish other TPTB were as aware as Angones when it came to handling queer representation in media. I look forward to what he and his team have planned to share with fans in the upcoming episodes.

And yes, Disney needs to step it up when writing queer characters in their live-action movies.

Maybe the upcoming Eternals movie will be better? Let’s see.

For those wondering about the names of Violet’s dads, they are:

As of now, DuckTales has aired a total of 49 episodes. It’s done a wonderful job of fleshing out classic Disney characters. It even brought back Donald’s sister!
