“The Exorcist” Showrunner Jeremy Slater Responds to Fans Offended By Gay Kiss

The Exorcist Poster Fox

The Exorcist showrunner Jeremy Slater had the perfect response for fans (I use the term loosely) who were offended by a gay kiss featuring one of the male lead characters, Marcus Keane.

I love it when showrunners stand up for their vision. I expect it from Bryan Fuller and now Jeremy Slater has joined the ranks. In a recent episode of The Exorcist Season 2, excommunicated former priest Marcus Keane (Ben Daniels) was shown kissing Peter Morrow (Christopher Cousins). Of course, some viewers were offended and Jeremy Slater responded.

During an interview with Sci-Fi Bulletin, Slater said, “I saw a couple of homophobes on Twitter and my response is, ’Good, fu*k you. I’m glad you didn’t like it, I’m glad it ruined the show for you. You shouldn’t have good things in your life.”

If a homophobe can’t watch the show anymore because one of the characters is gay, then I’m glad something good has come out of it,” Slater continued. “This is 2017 and we still have people throwing temper tantrums online because they don’t want to see gay characters. I think it’s the last gasp of a certain breed of dinosaur that’s on the way out, and let them kick and scream as they go.”

Here are some more awesome quotes!

I think the moment meant a lot to a lot of viewers, particularly viewers who aren’t necessarily used to seeing gay representation on TV with older characters that’s treated with the sensitivity that Ben and Christopher [Cousins] both brought to that performance.”

“We’ve said from the beginning that Marcus is a bisexual character, which is pretty rare on television in general and certainly on network television, where everyone has binary definitions of gay or straight.”

You should go ahead and read the entire interview!

The Exorcist Season 2 is currently airing on Fox (home to Gotham). It is a horror-drama and serves as a sequel to the 1973 film.

The current backlash also reminded me of the kiss between Aaron and Eric in The Walking Dead. It’s kind of funny when you go over such hateful reactions and see that people are okay with violence but not queer characters.

You should definitely watch The Exorcist and help it out with ratings. We need such shows on our TV screens.

What do you think of Jeremy Slater’s response? Let us know.
