I’m not sure about how to feel about the actual plot yet, but certain scenes in the Fena: Pirate Princess trailer do look gorgeous. The upcoming anime series, inspired by Shojo manga, will get a two-episode debut on Crunchyroll and Adult Swim come August 14, 2021.

Viewers in North America will be able to watch the English dubbed version of Fena: Pirate Princess on Adult Swim while the subtitled version will be streamed worldwide outside of Japan by Crunchyroll

The description for this series reads:

Fena Houtman remembers little about her childhood. Orphaned and raised as a servant in a brothel, her life changes when she escapes to an island of pirates where she discovers the truth behind her family. With Fena being the only one able to unlock her family’s secrets, and a formidable crew of female pirates on her tail, she must take her place as captain of her Samurai crew for a high seas adventure!

I mean, I’m kind of here for the mashup of pirates and samurai. Also, having a “formidable crew of female pirates” chase after Fena is an interesting choice. We don’t get a lot of content featuring female pirates in media.

Here’s the latest English dubbed trailer!

From what I could gather from the promo material, a tragedy results in a kid Fena growing up all alone on an island. As a young girl, after trying to put a stop to being married off without consent, Fena’s rescued by two guys and is then tasked with completing her dead father’s mysterious mission. She also gets a group of highly skilled Samurai crew to help her as well as a ship (I think it’s supposed to be a submarine?). Apparantly, her journey will unlock the answers behind how she became an orphan in the first place. We might even get something having to do with saving the world and how her family is involved in all of it.

Here are the English cast details:

  • Fena Houtman (Brittany Cox): A positive, cheerful orphan despite her traumatic past. Known for her pale skin and glowing silver hair.
  • Yukimaru (Robb Moreira): The introverted, katana-wielding bodyguard of the Houtman family. He is extremely protective of Fena.
  • Shitan (Nicholas Corda): This handsome, elite warrior can kill with his bow and arrow—or his looks. Though on the surface he seems aloof, he greatly values his friends.
  • Karin (Anjali Kunapaneni): Raised by a family of blacksmiths, Karin geeks out over technology like her rifle, which she uses to great effect in battle.
  • Enju (Brandon Winckler): Kaede’s elder twin. They both use a spear and wakizashi in battle, they’re both friendly and mischievous, but Enju feels he’s more dependable than his younger brother.
  • Kaede (Darrel J Delfin): Enju’s younger twin. They both use a spear and wakizashi in battle, they’re both friendly and mischievous, but Kaede feels he’s more manly than his elder brother.
  • Tsubaki (Alan Lee): The oldest and most mature member of the group, he manages everyone’s wild energy. He’s also the cook, but when he fights, he uses a short ninja sword.
  • Makaba (Thomas E Wynn): This mountain of a boy prefers fighting in close quarters with brass knuckles. When he’s not fighting, he’s kind-hearted and mild-mannered.
  • Salman (Frank Todaro): An older knight who was once called “Salman the Onslaught” for being so deadly with a spear. He’s known Fena since she was a girl as he served the Houtman family for some time.
  • Otto (Doug Stone): Another older knight who served the Houtman family and possessed an intimidating nickname in his younger days—”Otto the Blitz” for his quick swordplay.

According to Anime News Network, Fena: Pirate Princess will debut in Japan in October. The Japanese voice cast includes:

  • Asami Seto as Fena Houtman.
  • Ryōta Suzuki as Yukimaru.
  • Takahiro Sakurai as Shitan.
  • Aoi Yūki as Karin.
  • Gen Sato as Enju.
  • Ryota Ohsaka as Kaede.
  • Jun Oosuka as Tsubaki.
  • Shintarō Tanaka as Makaba.
  • Manabu Muraji as Salman.
  • Hiroaki Hirata as Otto

This anime series is supposed to have 12 episodes (each being half an hour long). It has been created and directed by Kazuto Nakazawa with Production I.G. serving as the animation studio. Asako Kuboyama wrote it.

Here’s a video from last year showcasing more scenes from the anime as well as a Q&A with Nakazawa. According to him, the story takes place in 18th Century Europe. Due to how the action and romance are handled, the narrative in Fena: Pirate Princess is supposed to be somewhere between the Shojo manga and Shonen manga genres.

After the two-episode premiere this August, new episodes will be released weekly. I’m interested in seeing the reception this anime will get. It does look promising.
