I mean, I don’t know if anyone was hoping for a live-action Final Fantasy TV series (unless the budget was good), but we seem to be getting one from Square Enix, Sony Pictures Television, and Hivemind. I’m excited about the upcoming project, but again, it won’t work without a proper budget.

The untitled live-action Final Fantasy show will be set in the MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV‘s world, Eorzea. The story will be original. However, fans can look forward to appearances from certain characters spanning the franchise’s decades-long existence.

Final Fantasy XIV and Eorzea are the perfect gateway into Final Fantasy for longtime fans and newcomers alike,” said Sony Pictures Television Co-President Chris Parnell. “This show is about embracing and embodying all of the elements that have made the mythos such an endlessly captivating phenomenon, and it’s an immense honor to be bringing all of Eorzea’s iconic characters, settings, and concepts – including fan-favorites like Cid and, of course, the chocobos – to life for a television audience.”

The series is supposed to showcase “the struggle between magic and technology in a quest to bring peace to a land in conflict,” according to the producers’ announcement, and be filled with “iconic hallmarks of the title’s revered mythology [including] magitek and beastmen, airships and chocobos.”

That sure sounds expensive to me!

Ben Lustig and Jake Thornton have signed on as writers and executive producers of the show. They will be joined by Sony, Square Enix, and Hivemind’s Jason F. Brown, Sean Daniel, and Dinesh Shamdasani.

Television is the ideal medium to capture the extraordinary depth, sophisticated themes, and unparalleled imagination of Final Fantasy and its multitude of unique and fully realized characters,” said Brown. “We are working tirelessly to bring together artists from around the world who are united in honoring the extraordinary legacy of this franchise and its millions of fans around the world.”

Take note, Hivemind is also producing Amazon’s The Expanse and Netflix’s The Witcher series.

We have no idea when the show is supposed to debut and on what platform. Also, no casting choices have been shared, as far as I can tell. Fingers crossed they cast Asian talent. The live-action FF XIV: Dad of Light had that. So, let’s see what happens.
