Find Out More About Ilvermorny (And Get Sorted!)

ilvermorny

When Pottermore launched its revamped design, I was skeptical. Though, to be honest, I didn’t spend a whole lot of time on the site as it was.

I’m still not a fan of the layout – it’s designed for mobile and tablets more so than computers – and I miss the mini games and all of the beautiful artwork. But I will admit that I’m enjoying all of the new content that this new design allows. It is much easier to add new information about the wizarding world when you don’t have to worry about where it fits in the story of Harry Potter. For example, today new information was released about Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, aka the North American Hogwarts.

In addition to getting a very detailed history of Ilvermorny’s founding in the 1600s, you are also able to be sorted into one of the school’s four houses. Unlike Hogwarts houses, which are named after the four founders, Ilvermorny’s house names are taken from magical beasts: Horned Serpent, Thunderbird, Wampus, and Pukwudgie. (For those interested, I’m a Thunderbird!)

Afraid of being sorted into a different house other than my beloved Ravenclaw, I didn’t choose to go through the sorting ceremony again when Pottermore relaunched. So, I can’t judge as to whether or not the sortings are the same, or whether the questions are similar are not. I will say that I enjoyed the animations in the images and was intrigued by the questions, which were far more philosophical than I remember the original Pottermore sorting questions to be.

What was most fascinating to me was the history of Ilvermorny and how many connections it has to not only Hogwarts but also Harry’s story. I also loved reading about the school itself and how things are set up. (The Ilvermorny sorting ceremony sounds so interesting!) I hope that one day we get a more detailed account of Hogwarts’ founding; I also hope, the closer we get to the release of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, that we learn more about the American wizarding world.

Have you taken the Ilvermorny sorting quiz yet? Where did you end up?
