Five Years Anniversary – Open Letter from the Admin

Hello Geekiary Readers & Supporters,

Five years ago I started this website with some friends.   We mainly wanted a place to channel our ideas and thoughts into one centralized place because, at the time, much of what we did was scattered across social media on Tumblr, Twitter, Livejournal, Facebook, and beyond.  At the same time, we saw many media outlets having a place at the table at pop culture conventions asking questions that weren’t relevant to the fandom spaces we were coming from and we felt the frustration bubbling up from our communities about why certain topics were being ignored.  Many fans felt we simply weren’t being represented.  It was from that desire for a fandom voice at the table  and that need to organize our thoughts that The Geekiary was born.  And now, five years later, we’re still here doing all that and much much more.

Over the years we’ve met many other bloggers and learned that the geek blogging community is large and diverse.  We’re grateful to be a part of the geek blogging community and so incredibly thankful to our supporters who have helped get us here.  Special thanks to our early mentors at the Friends of Comic Con forums, Lenny from An Englishman in San Diego, and many other members of the SDCC community who helped us get on our feet back in 2013 and launch with that convention.  Particular shoutout to Teresa from San Antonio, who has also been a supporter from the very beginning and continues to support us to this day.  And thanks to every single person who has followed us since that first year and every year since then.  We’re simply shook at the level of support that we get from you.

When we started we didn’t have on clearly defined mission statement other than “by fans, for fans.”  We settled on the slogan “we have a lot of FEELINGS” pretty early on because, let’s be real, we DO have a lot of FEELINGS, but we let the website develop its own path through the years and let our readers take us where they wanted to see the website go.  As a result of this, we developed a strong focus on representation, particularly LGBTQ+ and women in geek culture and media, and have been proud to represent these communities with our work.  We’ve adapted these goals into our About Page and our FAQs.  We became this because of you, our supporters, and we appreciate the strength you’ve given us to speak about these topics on our platform.

I also want to thank all the writers, editors, and admins who work tirelessly to keep this website up and running,  You guys are rock stars.  Whether you’ve been here from 2013 or just joined a few weeks ago, I am in awe of the work you are putting in for this website and I appreciate you.  Thank you for making The Geekiary what it is.

Over the past five years, so many amazing things have happened and we wouldn’t have gotten here if it weren’t for you.  Thanks to you, the Geekiary has:

• Attended approximately 70 conventions
• Had 56 Contributors, including Guest Bloggers, Regular Authors, Editors, and Admins
• Reached over 7 million views
• Accumulated over 13,000 comments
• Conducted over 230 celebrity & content creator interviews
• Been cited by TVLine, xoJane, Daily Dot (a few times), Vulture, and more!
