Flashback to the 80s with the Trailer for “Everybody Wants Some”

everybody wants some title

The trailer for Richard Linklater’s newest film Everybody Wants Some debuted today, and I may have made a noise only dogs can hear when I saw that. I have been waiting for a trailer for this movie ever since I found out that Tyler Hoechlin had been cast in it (and then when I went to Howler Con last year and saw him in person with his 70s pornstache).

Summary for Everybody Wants Some:

Set in the world of 1980s college life, Everybody Wants Some follows a group of college baseball players as they navigate their way through the freedoms and responsibilities of unsupervised adulthood. Get ready for the best weekend ever.

Linklater has described Everybody Wants Some as the “spiritual sequel” to his 1993 hit Dazed and Confused, and judging from the trailer, it does seem to have the same sort of low-key nostalgia and general air of the lackadaisical nature of youth. The early critics’ reviews quoted in the trailer seem promising, claiming that the movie is “beautiful, hilarious” and “deceptively deep”, so I am very excited for this movie.

Everybody Wants Some starring Blake Jenner, Zoey Dutsch, and Tyler Hoechlin opens in US theaters April 15th.

What do you guys think about the trailer? Are you as excited for the movie as I am? Let us know!

  1. Um, it seems like a sausagefest?

It’s too early to know, of course, but it doesn’t look as if women exist in these boys’ world except as objectives to be scored and witty set downs?

It may be funny … But I would only pay to watch it in a theatre if it was the only thing showing with decent reviews while my rarely available babysitters are actually available. I’d consider streaming it while my kid isn’t around but am unlikely to rent or own it due to amount of sexism that seems obvious.

Also, Hoechlin doesn’t seem to be central cast? That man really needs a good role. I really wish someone would make a live action series of movies or a tv show about the Vorkosigans… Then he could be cast as Ivan Vorpatril.

    1. Fair enough about the sausagefest — I checked out the trailer for Dazed and Confused for comparison and it definitely features women more prominently. There is some sexism in that, too, but the movie itself didn’t come across as sexist, so I can hope that the same holds true for this one, although the significant lack of female characters with actual names is disheartening. I was just really excited for Hoechlin and I am definitely one of those people shallow enough to see terrible movies for actors I like.

As for Hoechlin not being central cast, I don’t think that’s quite as important. I mean, Ben Affleck pretty much disappeared halfway through Dazed & Confused, yet I think a lot of people remember his character. I think the important thing is that he’s in a movie that should get decent buzz, because of Linklater, and hopefully he’s got a memorable role that will land him increasingly better movies.

  2. Yea, if I wasn’t a parent or if my kid was much older, I’d consider seeing it just to lend support to Hoechlin’s career. i suspect the man needs a better agent.
