Star Wars fans have a new expandable card game to look forward to. Funko Games have announced the Star Wars Rivals card game that is all about strategizing and having fun.

The Star Wars Rivals card game is supposed to release late in spring 2023. The game includes a Premier Set as well as expansive Character Booster Packs. The player can choose if they wish to join the Dark or the Light side of the Force. The gameplay will include building teams and coming up with the proper strategies when battling for control of locations familiar to fans of the Star Wars galaxy.

Due to the card game being expandable, there are numerous characters that you can include in your strategy. And, of course, the expandable nature of the game lends to a lot of replayability.

Not only that, the Star Wars Rivals card game will feature never-before-seen art stylization for both the card art and (the one thing I’m most excited about) the miniature sculpts!

The latest collaboration with Lucasfilm for the Star Wars Rivals Game has continued to elevate Funko Games’ collectible offerings through its all-new art style, including awesome hologram variants,” shared Deirdre Cross, Head of Funko Games. “We’re excited to introduce fans to new immersive gameplay, allowing them to experience unforgettable Star Wars locations as they join the light or dark side of the Force and battle it out with their favorite characters from every era.”

Let’s talk about the Premier Set.

Meant for two players, you will get four character-themed game movers along with character cards. It also includes an exclusive prism die, 14 action cards, 18 tokens and markers, and 12 location cards, which include four that happen to be exclusive to the set. It will cost you MSRP $19.99 USD.

The Light Side and Dark Side Character Booster Packs include one character-themed game mover and character card, two location cards, a game die, five action cards, 16 tokens and markers.

The Character Booster Packs can be combined for immediate play, or they can be added to Premier Sets. Each booster pack will cost you MSRP $4.99 USD.

Judging by the promo material, I do like the overall aesthetic of the miniatures. They look cute and seem to be well-detailed. As for the strategy element, each character seems to come with unique abilities. For example, if there are no allies at Rey’s location, she has +7 ‘Influence’ for a round. I don’t know what the ‘Influence’ mechanic is supposed to mean yet. But Rey seems powerful enough.

Certain location cards also come with conditions that impact gameplay.

The characters on the Light Side include Yoda, Rey, Ahsoka, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Luke Skywalker, and more.

The Dark Side has Darth Vader, Palpatine, Count Dooku, and other iconic characters.

Even if you aren’t into playing the card game, you can still try to collect all of the miniatures (someone please gift them all to me!).

Series 1 will include over 20 characters, plus hologram characters with unique special abilities.

Take note; a limited pre-release sale for all Star Wars Rivals products will begin at Star Wars Celebration, April 7-10, 2023.

The Premier Set will be available starting May 4, 2023, with availability in all U.S.A Walmart store locations in early June 2023. You will be able to find this card game at other retailers later this year.
