Ghostbusters Scores a $46 million Debut at the Domestic Box Office

While the female-led reboot of Ghostbusters didn’t manage to score first place at the box office this weekend, it still had an impressive debut.

Negative reaction to the idea of rebooting the Ghostbusters franchise with an all-star all-female cast started before the trailer was even released. The negative reaction continued as the trailer quickly became one of most disliked videos in YouTube history. However, that wasn’t enough to stop people from actually going to see the film when it hit theaters. Ghostbusters grossed an estimated $46 million domestically at the box office this weekend.

The animated film The Secret Life of Pets remained at the top spot for the second week and grossed another $50.6 million. The film’s domestic count now stands at $203.2 million. Another female-led film, Finding Dory, also had a good week. The animated movie has now become the highest grossing animated film of all time in North America. Finding Dory, which may or may not have shown a lesbian couple, has grossed $445.5 million domestically (not adjusted for inflation).

The current gross has put Finding Dory ahead of Shrek 2 ($441.2 million), The Lion King ($422.8 million), Toy Story 3 ($415 million), and Frozen ($400.7 million).

Coming back to Ghostbusters, our writer Jessica enjoyed watching it. The current box office numbers also prove that one should not pay attention to such negative comments. A lot of people (mostly hurt fanboys) were very vocal on social media about the movie flopping because no one will come watch it. But guess what? People actually did come to see it.

Internationally the film scored the top position in the UK and Australia. It will be released in Russia and Italy on the 28th of July. It will open in more major international markets in August.

Ghostbusters was produced on a budget of $144 million and has managed to gross a total of $65.1 million as of yet. Fingers crossed that it is able to return a profit for the studio and continues as a franchise.
