One bright spot in this dumpster fire of a year is that Given The Movie hit Japanese theaters. For those of us who have been waiting what seems like years for any information on the Yuri on Ice movie, a promised movie actually getting finished and into theaters is a dream come true. And we here at The Geekiary are big fans of Given and have been eagerly awaiting news about when those of us in the US will be able to see the film.

Well, everyone get ready, because Crunchyroll announced today that Given The Movie will begin streaming on Crunchyroll in 2021, worldwide outside of Asia. The film is a sequel to the original anime series, based on the manga by Natsuki Kizu, which was simulcast by Crunchyroll in 2019. All 11 episodes are titled after songs from British rock groups, a favorite genre of the main character’s, Ritsuka Uenoyama.

Given is a BL manga and anime, and it was extremely hilarious watching people who weren’t aware of that already figure it out in the various episode discussion threads I frequented as it was airing.

Here is the premise, according to Crunchyroll:

High school student Ritsuka Uenoyama is shocked when he hears Mafuyu Sato’s singing voice. He and his other band mates, Haruki Nakayama and Akihiko Kaji, then welcome him into their band as a vocalist. After Mafuyu joins, their first live performance is a huge success, and they make their official debut as the band “Given.” In the midst of all this, Ritsuka realizes that he has feelings for Mafuyu and they start seeing each other. Meanwhile, Haruki secretly has had feelings for Akihiko for years, but Akihiko was still in a relationship with his roommate, the violinist Ugetsu Murata. Haruki, Akihiko, and Ugetsu’s love clashes on the big screen and starts to move forward.

The beginning, with Ritsuka and Mafuyu, is the plot of the anime’s first (hopefully not only) season, with the Haruki/Akihiko/Ugetsu drama being the focus of the movie. While Ritsuka and Mafuyu’s story was fairly tame, especially by BL standards, the movie will be much more adult. Haruki, Akihiko, and Ugetsu are older, and their arc has a darker tone.

Given the manga is currently ongoing, and is published in English by SuBLime. The first three volumes are currently available, with volume 4 set to publish in November of this year.

Fans interested in streaming the film are asked to keep an eye on the social media for their regional Crunchyroll for premiere dates.
