Glee 5×13 Review: New Directions

This week’s episode really marked the end of New Directions and the Glee Club. Yes, Holly and April tried to save it but we all knew it wasn’t going to happen. For me, the Glee Club ended the moment the originals graduated. So, did Glee do a good job at saying farewell? For me, it did.

1493245_244842002366275_2074691792_nOne of the best things in the episode was Santana and Rachel making up. Their feud was just childish. Santana never dreamed about becoming a Broadway star and trying to take Rachel’s place didn’t make any sense. I think the writers realized they had dragged out the fight too long. The explanation they gave was that she was just mean. Yes, whatever Glee! Just come clean and admit the storyline didn’t make any sense to you guys either. Kurt and Mercedes tried to patch things up between the two girls, and Rachel even tried a peace offering but Santana didn’t accept it. It was Brittany that finally talked some sense into her and Santana resigned as Rachel’s understudy. I was thankful the show gave the whole thing a rest. We all know Santana is a mean and snarky character but I don’t like it when she’s mean to her friends for no reason. I am looking forward to a better storyline for her. One in which Glee shows her perusing her own dream. Rachel (Lea Michele) and Santana’s (Naya Rivera) voices really mesh well together and their performance together was amazing!

I also enjoyed the video message Holly helped the Glee kids create for Will’s baby. The best part was when Kurt talked about his own kids and Blaine came into mention they used a surrogate and then Quinn made an appearance to say she donated the egg…Hilarious! I’m on board with Quinn donating her egg for Blaine and Kurt’s kids.

The episode also showed the characters that will definitely be moving to New York. It’s certain that Blaine (Yes!), Artie (Yes!), and Sam (sigh!) will be there. Brittany will also come along with Santana because she’s tired of being a Mathematics genius at MIT. Tina looked as if she would be included but she got a call from Brown University. So, bye Tina!

The show gave Will a proper ending and he took his final bow in the empty choir room. The thing I couldn’t understand was how the show didn’t give the new characters a proper ending. Glee has been trying to make us like the new characters since Season 4 but it didn’t stick. That’s probably why they decided to shift focus on the NY storyline with the original cast. Glee should’ve done that from the start. The new characters felt like a big mistake on the show’s part and it became quite obvious since the start of Season 5. Their storylines didn’t come to a conclusion and we weren’t even shown what they’ll be doing now that Glee Club is over.

All in all, it was an enjoyable episode and the Glee Club singing ‘Don’t stop Believing’ was very nostalgic. It’s was the first ever song sung by them, so it felt right they said farewell singing it. Next week is New York and I can’t wait to see how things work out for these characters.

Are you excited for the focus on New York? Are you sad the new members didn’t get much to do this season? Please share!
