Welcome to the latest Geekiary News Briefs! We’re going to go over the recent box office numbers, a new Netflix project by the Russo Brothers, Robert Pattinson being confirmed as Batman, and more!

Even though I wasn’t interested in watching Godzilla: King of the Monsters in theatres, I wanted the film to do well because of the Godzilla vs. Kong sequel set for a March 13, 2020 release. Even though the giant lizard is extremely popular in Asian markets, it just doesn’t seem to be connecting with people in the West.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters saw a low weekend opening of only $49 million. The current Rotten Tomatoes score is at 39%. With a reported budget of $170 million (excluding advertising), the film is highly dependent on overseas gross to turn a profit.

Godzilla vs. Kong has already been filmed, so it will be interesting to see how Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures plan to ensure that it is a success next year.

As for the rest of the box office, Rocketman opened with $25 million. The Elton John biopic will need to make a name for itself when the award season begins to be considered truly successful.

While Ma did open at $18.2 million (and will turn a profit against a reported $5 million budget), I want Oscar-winner Octavia Spencer to get movies really deserving of her incredible acting talent.

Fans of Magic: The Gathering can look forward to an animated series from the Russo Brothers on Netflix. With the brothers serving as executive producers, Henry Gilroy (Star Wars: Rebels) and Jose Molina (The Tick) are the lead writers.

Series production will be overseen by the studio Octopie. “Our goal is to not only tell a compelling story leveraging Magic: The Gathering’s incredible body of work, but to also push the medium and perception of storytelling through animation,” said Octopie CEO Isaac Krauss in a statement. “This series will cross the genres of suspenseful thriller, horror, and drama with deeply developed characters the likes of which are not often seen in animation.”

It is official! Robert Pattinson is the new Batman! Look forward to him wearing the cowl in Matt Reeves’ Batman solo film.

If his suit doesn’t glitter, then what is even the point of such casting? Also, sign Taylor Lautner as Catwoman, and Kristen Stewart as the Joker, you cowards!
