Helix 2×10 Review: Mother

mother-1

This week’s Helix took some very dark turns, and it was difficult to swallow. For the first time in the series, even with the perpetual craziness, my jaw dropped to the floor. Just when we thought certain characters could not get any more selfish, pretty much every one in this episode did things that would further only their own agendas. Relationships got super complicated, new alliances were formed, and one of the most disturbing scenes that I have ever seen on television took place. “Mother” is not for the faint of heart.

The unlikely alliance between Sarah and Julia took place early on the episode, and their sole purpose was to figure omother-2ut how to make Amy immortal. As predicted, Landry’s injection of the immortal spinal fluid did not go well, and he turned out seriously disfigured. It is okay, because he is the one that stole Mother (because he is Anne’s son!!!) and hid her in the bell tower of the abbey–he really is Quasimodo! This means that Amy and Landry are siblings, which is all kinds of weird. Julia knows that time is of the essence because Ilaria’s plan to release Narvik C will happen in three days. Sarah also drops the bombshell about her fetus being held captive, and that Alan is the father. Fortunately, this does not seem to deter them from finding a way to cater to Amy’s demands.

Meanwhile, in another part of the island, Alan, Kyle, and others tried desperately to find the bleeding tree to help slow the mycotic. Kyle has some very disturbing hallucinations that do not entirely make sense, but I am sure they will play a big role later on. After talking down Kyle from murdering Soren, the group finally stumbles upon the bleeding tree. Let’s hope that Kyle gets cured soon because we really could use his dose of reality check.

Peter continued to be a drama queen in this episode, and Anne took full advantage of his weakness. After getting completely shut down by Julia, Anne does some master manipulation and seems to want Peter to take over Michael’s work. What we found out this week was what Michael’s work actually is, and it involves the teeth. Indeed, we got answers about the teeth, and it turns out that Michael is harvesting babies from adult vessels that are completely incapacitated. This was much more disturbing than I can describe, and is another example of Helix possibly taking the crazy too far. We will see how it pans out.

After an epmother-3ic tantrum, Amy finally encounters Sergio. Now before I say anything about their interaction, let me tell you that these two have incredible chemistry. I want them to get together; they are electric. Unfortunately, Sergio outright says that the last thing the world needs is a “forever Amy,” so I guess my dreams of that ship are dashed. After a struggle over Mother, Amy pushes Sergio off the top of the bell tower, and all signs point to him being dead. I, for one, hope that this is not the case, and that Sergio is a secret immortal!

In the end, Julia promises to make Amy immortal by implanting Sarah’s fetus inside Amy. This kills two birds with one stone: make Amy immortal and save Sarah’s fetus. Unfortunately, Julia did not give Sarah a heads up on this plan before announcing it, so we will have to wait until next week to enjoy the fallout. Amy, however, seems overjoyed to become a mother.

So many answers were provided in “Mother”, but not all of them sat well with me. I feel that even though we were unsure of what the ultimate plan of Michael and the followers was from the beginning, we were meant to be on their side because of the fact that they could avoid genocide created by Ilaria. Unfortunately, the followers were perpetuating the genocide all along! Although this makes completely sense in the arc of the story, seeing it all play out was incredibly troubling. I am hoping the show can get back to the campy goodness that we all love, and leave some of the dark behind.
