Idina Menzel Is Down with Elsa Getting a Girlfriend

In case you missed, it there’s a campaign to #GiveElsaAGirlfriend in the Frozen sequel. Adding fuel to this awesome flame, Idina Menzel told ET she thinks the campaign is great.

“I think it’s great,” said Menzel when she spoke to ET on the red carpet for the Billboard Music Awards. “Disney’s just gotta contend with that. I’ll let them figure that out.” She added that she would support it “no matter what”.

The #GiveElsaAGirlfriend campaign was started by 17-year-old fan Alexis Isabel Moncada, and quickly gained steam on social media. Moncada said that the “fact that Elsa hasn’t been cast a love interest yet leaves room for one.”

A lot of people viewed Elsa’s story as a metaphor for coming out – and “Let It Go” became an anthem of sorts for LGBTQI+ people – so it would be cool to see it become explicit in the sequel. Plus, Disney would have a whole new princess to add to their collection.

Now that Elsa herself has approved of the idea, all that’s standing in our way is…well, there’s a lot standing in our way, but it all seems rather silly when you think about them. Just let Elsa find her princess already, Disney.

We don’t know much about the Frozen sequel yet, apart from the fact that it is coming some time in the future and that Kristen Bell is super hyped for it.

Hopefully everyone has gotten over their Frozen-fatigue before it’s released, because it all got a little overwhelming for a while there. One thing is for sure, if Elsa does get a girlfriend, it will certainly get people talking about Frozen again.

Also it’s totally worth it to be able to sing “Let It Go” at anyone that has a homophobic reaction to the prospect of a queer Disney princess.

  1. It’d be fantastic to have a queer Elsa, but as I’ve already said in the Cap.America’s comment, I don’t think that Disney is ready yet to go there; y’know to risk such a profitable cash cow, you can imagine (especially speaking of the unbelievable success of Frozen!!)…The fact that lots of people saw a double meaning to her loneliness & song I don’t think it’s enough to do that extra jump needed to go where we’d want it to go (e.g. they didn’t do it not even for Loki, who has a fluid sexuality in canon).

However never say never…& at least I’m positive that we’ll have so many nice fanfic going on for all our heroes after this side gossip!^_^

    1. I hope Disney goes there with something. We’ve got Elsa, Poe Dameron, and Captain America. The latter is part of a comic adaptation, but the first two are completely original. We can totally do this. Disney come on please *makes puppy eyes at Disney*
