I’m Positively Glee-ful About the Upcoming Flash/Supergirl Musical

If you, like me, got ridiculously excited about the announcement of a musical crossover between the CW’s Supergirl and The Flash, then you might want to keep reading so you can find out everything we know about it so far.

For starters, it was revealed today that Darren Criss will be playing the Music Meister, the crossover’s main villain. Music Meister’s first appearance in the DC Universe was in a 2009 episode of the animated Batman: The Brave and the Bold series, where he was voiced by Neil Patrick Harris. He’s able to hypnotize people with his voice when he sings, hence the musical episode.

It will be a Glee reunion as Criss reunites with former co-stars Grant Gustin (Barry Allen/The Flash) and Melissa Benoist (Kara Danvers/Supergirl). Now, I’m a fan of Darren (his run in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying is probably the only time I’ve ever paid full price for Broadway tickets), but I can’t help but think about how amazing it would have been to get Neil Patrick Harris for the role. No doubt a major factor in Darren’s casting – aside from his well-known musical chops – is his already existing rapport with the two leads.

Aside from Criss, Gustin, and Benoist, the other cast members who will be singing are all Broadway veterans: Jesse L. Martin (Joe), Victor Garber (Dr. Stein), John Barrowman (Malcolm Merlyn), Jeremy Jordan (Winn) and Carlos Valdes (Cisco).

You’ll notice that most of the singing characters are from The Flash – or, at least, from the Earth in which The Flash takes place. That’s because most of the singing in the crossover – which starts with Supergirl, Monday, March 20 and continues with The Flash the following night – takes place in The Flash. As with the DC’s earlier “Heroes vs. Aliens” crossover, it doesn’t really start until the end of Supergirl. The March 21st episode of The Flash is called “Duet”.

For the record, David Harewood (Hank) and Christopher Wood (Mon-El) also appear in the episode, but won’t be singing.

If you’re confused about the appearance of Malcolm Merlyn, he previously appeared on a season two episode of The Flash – a crossover with Arrow. I’m very curious how they’re going to fit him into the storyline, since he doesn’t make it a habit of popping up in Central City.

Well, that’s about all we know so far! No trailer or promotional stills have been released, so we’ll just have to resort to our imaginations to fill in the blanks for the next two months.

Don’t forget! Supergirl returns tonight with episode 2×09, “Supergirl Lives”, at 8pm Eastern!
