Confession time: I LOVE a good romantic comedy! If I were to compile a list of my top ten favorite movies, probably 80% of that list would be rom-coms. I just love a happy ending. So when I first heard about the movie Isn’t It Romantic, I was excited. The cast included some of my favorite actors (Rebel Wilson and Adam Devine) and it looked really funny.

The movie, directed by Todd Strauss-Schulson (A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas 3D) stars Rebel Wilson (Pitch Perfect franchise, How To Be Single) as Natalie, an architect who has become jaded by love. She works with Josh, portrayed by Adam Devine (Pitch Perfect franchise, Modern Family) who has a thing for Natalie, but she is oblivious to this fact. Natalie gets injured and when she comes to, she realizes that she is now smack dab in the middle of a romantic comedy, which is now her life. The film also stars Priyanka Chopra (Baywatch, Quantico) as Isabella, a “yoga ambassador”, Betty Gilpin (Glow, Nurse Jackie) as Whitney, Natalie’s assistant and Liam Hemsworth (Hunger Games franchise, Independence Day:Resurgence) as Blake, a wealthy man who goes to Natalie’s firm to design his new hotel and Brandon Scott Jones (Can You Ever Forgive Me?) as Donny, Natalie’s neighbor. Natalie realizes that in order to get out of this rom-com fantasy that is now her life, she has to find the person she is meant to fall in love with.

Isn’t It Romantic is a super fun movie. It has every romantic comedy cliché that has ever been used, which for a rom-com fan was very enjoyable to see. The movie garnered plenty of laughs from the audience and also had a lot of heart.

When making fun of a trope, it’s very easy to fall prey to it in the process. Isn’t It Romantic? sidesteps that. The movie manages to expose the ridiculousness of problematic tropes (looking at you, Gay Best Friend) and poke lighthearted fun at silly ones (Cute Clumsy Girls and Breaking Up Weddings) with equal skill. The audience gets to laugh along instead of feeling like they’re the butt of the joke.

Director Todd Strauss-Schulson recently said in an interview, “You are always complete. You always have been.” I think that is the most profound way to describe the overall theme of this film. There is a slight twist in the movie, which I truly liked seeing. Rebel Wilson and Adam Devine are fantastic in their Pitch Perfect reunion. The supporting cast support the leads in a fabulous way that makes them shine on their own as well.

This film works as a solid date night option or the perfect Girls’ Night Out. I would give this movie 3.5 out of 5 flower bouquets.
