Animal Kingdom 4×11 Review: Julia

Animal Kingdom Julia Review Season 4 Episode 11

With only two episodes left this season, this week’s episode of Animal Kingdom, titled ‘Julia,’ gave us numerous character interactions. Also, the flashback sequences were amazing!

I was provided a free advance screener of ‘Julia’ for review. The opinions are my own.

If you ask me, I have no idea what’s going to happen in the upcoming episodes. The show has already been renewed for a fifth season, so they can’t just kill everyone next week or during the finale, right? I don’t know anything at this point. There are numerous fan theories and speculations floating around. We’ll find out what happens soon enough.

Coming back to ‘Julia,’ the episode was directed by Shawn Hatosy (Pope). Hatosy directed an episode in the previous season, and I appreciated him working behind as well as in front of the camera during ‘Julia.’ Some of the framing choices he made were quite clear. I liked the shot, set in the past, where Janine and Colin argued while Manny could be seen between them (awkwardly standing by the door). That particular scene mirrored a similar shot between Pope and Angela, with Joshua standing between them. Good work, Hatosy!

Even though I haven’t been a fan of Pope and Angela, I liked how she ended up telling him the truth. She was manipulating Pope to get some money. As far as Pope is concerned, he thinks if he can help Angela, he can be at peace with the fact he didn’t do anything to help his sister Julia. It makes sense in Pope’s head. So, I guess, that’s all that matters.

As for Angela, even though she has some power over Pope, standing up to Joshua is probably not going to end well for her.

The flashback gave us some interesting scenes. It turns out, Janine and Colin really loved each other even though it wasn’t supposed to last. Seeing Janine breakdown after his death was a well-shot emotional scene. I wouldn’t be surprised if she decided to live with Jed (Colin’s brother) and his wife until she gave birth to the twins.

Coming to Adrian and Deran, I’m mentally preparing myself for tragedy. Even with Deran asking Craig to get them fake passports, whether Deran and Adrian will actually be able to run away to Mexico is still up in the air.

Why are you doing this to us, Animal Kingdom writers? Why?

Some more thoughts and questions:

  • With only two more episode, will we see the Codys doing Frankie’s job next season?
  • How long will Craig be able to stay with his son and Renn?
  • How long will Angela stick around for?
  • Is Smurf going to die in the finale? There are some theories about Smurf lying to her sons about having cancer.

What did you think of ‘Julia’? Let us know.
