Killjoys Gets New Opening Credits Sequence for Season Two

Killjoys

Space Channel has released a new opening credits sequence for Killjoys season 2 a bit early. Season 2 of Killjoys starts July 1 on Space Channel in Canada and on SyFy Channel in the US.

The new opening, which is a very different style from the season 1 opening, comes from Cuppa Coffee Studios in Toronto (where Killjoys is filmed).

Space Channel posted the new sequence and an interview with Creative Director Chris Morris on their website, giving fans a peek into the process behind creating the opening credits. Morris said he was inspired by a technique developed by Indonesian artist Wedha Abdul Rahid, called Wedha Pop Art Portrait (WPAP). It took 2 months to create the sequence, and the studio used footage from the show to rotoscope the characters. (Rotoscoping, for those not familiar with animation terms, is when animators trace over live-action footage as a guide for animation).

Morris felt that the WPAP technique allowed the studio to strongly capture the characters and their personalities—including the AI ship, Lucy:

I think our portrait of Lucy captures the high-tech vibe that we were after but it also has the crazy explosion of color I was inspired by and I’m very proud of it. All of the characters translated really well on screen. D’avin comes across as tough with attitude—I love his smirk at the beginning of the sequence. Dutch appears beautiful and dangerous. Her hug with John is my favorite shot in the sequence. I have to say, John was my favorite character to create. I think it’s his eyes. John’s eyes are so intense in every shot and his face really translated well to our illustration style. I guess credit should go to Aaron Ashmore for being so photogenic but I still have difficulty thinking about the actors behind the roles because the characters in this show are so strong.

Space Channel and SyFy also released a new promo poster last week. You can read The Geekiary’s post with the poster and the most recent season 2 trailer, along with a few season 2 spoilers, here.

Killjoys, centering around a trio of space bounty hunters, Dutch (Hannah John-Kamen), Johnny Jaqobis (Aaron Ashmore), and his brother D’avin Jaqobis (Luke Macfarlane), had a fun, fast-paced season 1, not without moments of heartache. It has an active fanbase online, and fans are excited for season 2.
