Killjoys Renewed For Two More (and Final) Seasons

Killjoys

Some good news for fans of Space Channel and Syfy Channel’s Killoys—the action/science fiction series has been renewed for two more, final seasons. The show will end with season five.

Killjoys, which debuted on Canada’s Space Channel and on Syfy Channel in the US in summer 2015, has gathered a strong fanbase online as well as high praise. Like some of SyFy channel’s other shows such as Wynonna Earp, Killjoys has a diverse array of characters and a tendency to toy with and overturn genre TV tropes. As well as being a fast-paced, fun space action-adventure series, Killjoys also keeps bringing heart-rending emotional moments and arcs. It occasionally goes to some dark places, exploring its characters without getting bogged down in a hopeless narrative. The dangers are real, the truths are sometimes harsh, but there is also joy and all the reasons why you might expect a series about bounty hunters in space to be appealing.

The series’ focal points are three bounty hunters, known as “killjoys”: Dutch (Hannah John-Kamen) and brothers D’Avin (Luke Macfarlane) and Johnny Jaqobis (Aaron Ashmore). The show wouldn’t be complete without its wonderful supporting cast, including warlord-turned-bartender Pree (Thom Allison), bounty hunter Fancy Lee (Sean Baek), who might or might not actually be a little bit nice underneath the surface (but don’t let him hear you say that) or new addition this season of the geeky Zeph (Kelly McCormack). There is also Lucy, the killoys’ AI spaceship (voiced by Tamsen McDonough), a character in her own right. At its basis, amid the spaceship battles, conspiracies involving green goo, and kickass fight scenes, Killjoys is about family, how it forms beyond blood ties, what tests it, and the emotional connections between the characters.

The characters have developed believably over the past three seasons. Season three opened up the scale of what our heroes are up against, expanding to a full-out war to stop an alien race known as the Hullen bent on galactic domination.

As reported in Variety, season four will air in 2018. Both season four and five will be ten episodes each, similar in length to seasons one to three. Creator and Executive Producer Michelle Lovretta (Lost Girl) says of the two season pick-up:

“This renewal is the kind of privilege every creator hopes for – a chance to plan the end of your story with the luxury of 20 episodes to do it. I’m immensely grateful that both of our network partners — along with Temple Street and UCP — have given our team, cast and fans this incredible opportunity.”

The season finale of Killjoys airs Friday 9/1. Are you excited about season four and five? Any theories where it will take the characters next? Sound off in the comments.
