Laika Studios has released the official final trailer for the much-anticipated stop-motion fantasy film Wildwood. The story focuses on a young girl’s journey to save her kidnapped baby brother.

Directed by Travis Knight, written by Chris Butler, and based on a novel of the same name by Colin Meloy & Carson Ellis, Laika’s Wildwood has already created a new record in the stop-motion genre by being the longest stop-motion animated feature film by running time. Apparantly, it boasts a running time of 132 minutes. Other than that, the quality showcased in the trailer and other promotional material has been incredibly impressive. I’m still in awe of the flight scenes!

From the trailer, you can tell that the narrative has a young girl named Prue McKeel as the protagonist. Prue’s life takes a drastic turn after a murder of crows kidnaps her baby brother, Mac, from a playground. Accompanied by her classmate Curtis Mehlberg, Prue decides to cross the Impassable Wilderness and gets to interact with numerous fantastical beings while searching for Mac.

Going by what I could gather, Prue and Curtis seem to enter a different dimension full of shapeshifters and a tall witch-like woman named Alexandra. Apparantly, there’s a war between two groups, with one group being led by Alexandra, who also seems responsible for kidnapping Mac for some “emotional” reason. Alexandra likely experienced a major loss in her life. Also, Prue could quite possibly have a connection to nature magic that she hadn’t paid much attention to before.

I mean, I could head on over to Wikipedia and read the plot of the original Wildwood novel. But with the movie planning to release on October 23, 2026, in North America, I don’t want to spoil myself like that.

Here’s the trailer!

The cast includes Peyton Elizabeth Lee as Prue McKeel, Jacob Tremblay as Curtis Mehlberg, Carey Mulligan as Alexandra, Mahershala Ali as Brendan, Angela Bassett as the General (the giant eagle), and more.

Wildwood will be Laika’s latest movie after Missing Link, which came out back in 2019. Fingers crossed that this project is able to turn things around for Laika and keep the art of stop-motion on the big screen alive.

What did you think of the final trailer for Wildwood? Are you excited to watch the movie?
