It’s ‘A Matter of Courage’ With Author J. C. Long – Interview

A Matter of Courage J C Long author interview queer books

Today we have author J. C. Long with us. Read on to learn about his book A Matter of Courage, his writing style, and more.

You all need to know about author J. C. Long. He has a lot of stories to offer readers interested in mysteries, suspense, and more with queer leads. Check out our interview with him.

Please introduce yourself to our readers.

Hey, everyone, I’m J. C. Long. I write MM romance in a variety of styles—mystery, suspense, contemporary, and erotica. I’m an American expat currently living in Japan. I’ve also lived in Seoul, South Korea, and Jochiwon, South Korea. I love corgis and Korean food!

How long have you been writing for? When did you realize you wanted to become an author?

As a published author I’ve been writing for a little over a year. However, I’ve been writing since I was 11 years old, starting in 6th grade when we had to do weekly vocabulary writings using all of our week’s vocabulary words. I naturally turned mine into a story.

Which other authors have inspired you?

I really admire C. S. Poe. Her mastery of timing and pacing have me super envious. Stephen King can weave a sentence like no one else I know. Also, J. K. Rowling, of course.

Do share about your writing process like?

I write basically every day. I have a set goal of 2,000 words a day, but if I come under I try not to beat myself up about it. Also, I like when I go over, though.

Any particular thing you do to deal with writer’s block?

I always have a backup project in the wings. If I get blocked on one I just switch to another until I feel unblocked.

Tell us a bit about A Matter of Courage. Who are the main protagonists? What kind of readers will it appeal to?

It’s a story set in Hong Kong, so anyone with an interest in the island might like it. The main protagonists are Steel and Winston, who we met in the first book in the series, A Matter of Duty, though they weren’t center stage. It will appeal to readers who like excitement and danger, and plot, dashed in evenly with their romance.

Would you like to share any opinions about the current state of LGBTQ+ literature? Has it gotten better?

I don’t know how to answer this. We’re improving, but we’ve got a long way to go. So much of what is out there is fetishistic, centering on sex, dehumanizing queer people in a way. But for every bad book, we’ve got new authors coming up with incredibly diverse and positively written representations.

Is there any advice you’d like to give aspiring authors?

Ignore the hype. There’s no one path to getting published, no one right way to write. Figure out the path that works for you and then take it. If you are a strict outliner, great. If you’re a pantser, great. Don’t let anyone tell you how you should be writing. It’s such a deeply personal process, what works for [insert famous author’s name] might not work for you.

Do you any opinions regarding indie and traditional publishing?

This is another place where the road is completely up to the author. Some authors work great and find great success being traditionally published, while some don’t. The reverse is true, as well. I think we’re going to see a rise of more and more hybrid authors, authors who are both traditionally published and indie published.

Are there any upcoming works you’d like to share with our readers?

October 23rd is the release of Hula Dancers and Hauntings, a short story with my characters from Gabe Maxfield Mysteries. November 6th is Tiki Torches and Treasure, the second Gabe Maxfield book. Then, in 2018 we have the third Hong Kong Nights book, A Matter of Justice, on February 19, and in April the release of my first sci-fi story, On Andross Station.

Author J. C. Long has some exciting books you can read and judging by the last question, there are more books his fans can forward to reading.

You can connect with him through Twitter, Facebook, and his official website.

A Matter of Courage is currently available from NineStar Press. I’ll be reviewing it soon.
