Lucifer at San Diego Comic-Con 2016

Lucifer

Lucifer is such a fun show. Before it gets started on its sophomore season, I was able to sit down at the press roundtable with the cast and a couple of the executive producers to talk about what is ahead for our favorite prince of darkness turned nightclub owner.

I was excited to learn that not only would some of the favorite main cast members from IMG_0112season one show up for the press room, but we were lucky enough to get two new cast members for the roundtable. Aimee Garcia (Dexter) is a new addition to the cast as human Ella Lopez, and genre favorite Tricia Helfer (Battlestar Galactica) joins as Lucifer’s mother, Charlotte Richards. As fans of both of these actors, it was interesting to hear what they had to say about their characters.

I was particularly interested in Garcia’s character. She mentioned that she is very proud of her character in that she is a strong female character who also happens to be a forensic scientist and Latina. Going along with that, she is also a woman of faith, so it will be interesting to see the dynamic that Ella has with Lucifer, particularly in the fallout from season one. Garcia said that she is eager to represent a woman of color on the small screen.IMG_0101

One of the recurring themes from the press room is the different dynamic that will happen in season two. Whereas season one was world-building and introduced viewers to Lucifer and his relationship with his father, season two will focus on introducing us to the relationship he has with his mother. According to Tom Ellis (Lucifer), we will get to see a completely different side to Lucifer in season two. According to Helfer, that doesn’t mean that the comedic aspect of the show will go away. In fact, she mentioned that some of the comedy will come from the knowledge that this form isn’t the only form her character has taken. They wouldn’t divulge too much information, but it does sound fIMG_0117un.

I am continually impressed with the diversity of the cast for this show. I suppose that when you have characters who are thousands of years old, not everyone is going to look like the casts of other shows on television. To me, it was clear from the interviews that the cast is aware of that diversity and are really trying to positively represent people of color. Even more than learning about what will happen on the show, be sure to watch all of the roundtables as you will get to learn about how the cast interacts with each other and the types of relationships that they have offscreen; their chemistry definitely transcends to what we see onscreen on a weekly basis.

Lucifer will return to Fox on September 19, 2016. The interviews below are with Aimee Garcia (Ella), executive producers Joe Henderson and Ildy Modrovich, Tricia Helfer (Charlotte) and Tom Ellis (Lucifer), Lesley-Ann Brandt (Mazikeen), and DB Woodside (Amendiel).
