Maleficent 2 Official Trailer: Battle of the Mothers-In-Law!

Maleficent

This morning, a new Maleficent: Mistress of Evil trailer dropped and I need ten more sets of eyes in ten alternate universes to watch the trailer simultaneously.

Whereas the teaser trailer left us with so many questions (WHERE IS DIAVAL?!), this trailer is literally BURSTING at the seams with juicy plot goodness. It opens with Aurora getting engaged because, well, it’s a fairy tale and of course Maleficent isn’t very keen on that given her history. She insists, “Love doesn’t always end well.”

It’s a true war of nurture vs nature, in more ways than one. Maleficent is the protector of the moors, the protector of Aurora, the protector of her own heart. Queen Ingrith (Michelle Pfeiffer), who I always suspected was a little bit of a villain herself, begins to threaten those things by informing The Great Fairy that Aurora is now her own daughter.

The battle sequences are done in daylight, with far more color. Aurora’s dresses alternate between pink and blue which might be a callback to the original Sleeping Beauty animated film. And now we’re finally given the look into what causes Maleficent to snap, and it looks like it’s a battle between human and magic, between mother and mother, between the so-called ‘good’ and the so-called ‘evil.’ It looks like, once again, the roles might be switched.

Not only is this a sequel but it also appears it might serve as a bit of an origin story as well. It teems with creatures of the moors, including the three fairies who raised Aurora, and at the very end, Maleficent is rescued by ‘another creature.’

During the closing moments of the trailer, there is what can only be described as a conclave of her own people: horned and winged, just as imposing and breathtaking as Maleficent herself. There’s still no word on who Ed Skrein is playing but I have my horns crossed it’s another creature like Maleficent.

By the way, the trailer song from the first Maleficent trailer is a cover of “Season of the Witch” and it’s by MOLLY. In this trailer, the ending is punctuated with a kind of primal humming. I require them to release the whole soundtrack RIGHT NOW! Please and THANK YOU!
