Marvel Heroes Unite in “Monsters Unleashed”

Monsters Unleashed

Marvel Comics has a new cross-universe storyline ramping up for next year, one that pits your favorite heroes against a literal parade of monsters popping up all over the place. All hands on deck for Monsters Unleashed.

There are certainly a lot of major events taking place in the Marvel Comics Universe lately, and in true comics fashion the consequences only last until the next reboot or alternate universe. But that doesn’t mean they can’t be entertaining in the meantime, and judging by the above promotional art, Monsters Unleashed is going to be like the 1997 Disney Hercules where he fights all the Titans – or Pacific Rim except without Jaegers.

Raining down from the outer reaches of the galaxy, rising up from the depths of the ocean, and emerging from the recesses of the Earth – monsters are staking their claim to the planet.  The only thing standing in their destructive path: the united Super Heroes of the Marvel Universe.

It’s all hands on deck, as the Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, X-Men, Inhumans and Champions, joined by a who’s who of solo stars – Deadpool, Spider-Man, Black Panther – battle an endless deluge of monsters and the mysterious force that controls them.  Will the combined might of the Marvel Super Heroes be enough to save the day?  Or will they need help to arrive from the unlikeliest of places?

Ooh, where oh where is “the unlikeliest of places”? I mean, we can speculate on that for days and probably be completely wrong, because this is Marvel, the company that made you love the relationship between a tree and a raccoon.

But no, actually, let’s go back to that promotional art, because I’m a fan. I can’t help but notice that there are two Spider-mans (presumably Peter Parker and Miles Morales, unless there is another Spider-man that I’m not aware of), and that Captain America is Sam Wilson and Thor still appears to be Jane Foster. And there is a dinosaur. A DINOSAUR.

Mostly I can’t help but wonder why all the huge crossover events. Is this a new phenomenon, a desperate cash grab, or simply a result of Marvel telling their artists and writers to “go nuts”? I like to think that there is a giant dartboard at Marvel HQ and someone landed on “Spider-man fights a T-Rex” and they just rolled with it.

Seriously, though, it will be very interesting to see how this goes, because to be perfectly honest I think Iron Man versus a T-Rex is a bit of an unfair fight. After all, T-Rexes have those tiny little arms, and Iron Man shoots beams of concentrated energy out of his hands.

Monsters Unleashed launches in January 2o17.

What do you guys think of Marvel’s latest epic crossover event?
