Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. 2×14 Review: Love In The Time Of Hydra

Let me just start off with: Pumpkin Pancakes and Pecan Syrup. Yes. I’ll take two… and throw in some cinnamon yogurt while you’re at it.

Okay, now that is out of the way, the newest episode of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has let me a little bit meh. I don’t know what it is. I guess it’s just been too long between Marvel movies, and I feel like things are dragging at the moment. This is probably why they name dropped the Avengers so much (Cap and Hulk, specifically). I do like AOS, don’t get me wrong, but I just didn’t feel into this episode as much as last week. I know I’m not the biggest fan of Grant Ward (sorry Brett Dalton), but I’m kind of glad when he’s not there. I think they screwed up his character a bit, but we’ll see. Hopefully some good will come of all of this.

As for this “real” S.H.I.E.L.D., the fact they don’t even know Fury is alive doesn’t make me too confident in them. I thought at the end of last week’s episode we were going to get a surprise Avengers cameo, maybe of Captain America. Man, was I wrong. The new leaders are okay. I’m a fan of Christine Adams (who we’ve seen before), Kirk Acevedo, and Edward James Olmos. I’m not familiar with Mark Allan Stewart, but Legend of Korra fans are. Anyway, it just kind of seems a bit too much at the moment. There are so many layers going on, I’m wishing for Daniel Whitehall to come back. Maybe it has to do with my love of Reed Diamond, but I don’t care. I liked how the season started. Now it’s just seemingly all over the place. Speaking of which, it was nice to see Talbot again, but I kind of feel he’s become a punchline. That’s a real shame, but hey, what can you do?

As for the Fitzsimmons moments (because that is an OTP that I will never stop rooting for), they were nice to have. It’s been a while since we’ve seen some good interaction between those two, platonic or otherwise, and I feel like they are the “warm fuzzy feeling” of the show. I miss them. Let’s have more of that, please. I also really liked the Skye and Coulson moments. I have definitely warmed up to her since the beginning of the series, and I am enjoying the direction they have taken her character. Even if she’s currently locked up playing boardgames by herself. The four of them are definitely my favorites on the show. Oh, and Nick Fury’s cabin? I feel like this is going to be like Clint’s farm all over again.

Ultimately, we’re left with Bobbi and Mack playing both sides (possibly), and Grant being followed around by a lost puppy named Agent 33. I think the reason I wasn’t so gung-ho about this week’s episode is because even though they are introducing more characters and elements to the overall mythos of the show, things are seemingly getting lost or overly complicated. So sue me, I kind of like the old “Monster of the week” format they had originally. I’m also not going to talk to the title allusion to Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s novel, because I have my own problems with that author that I’d rather not get into here because I’d rather not start throwing books again. Anyway, despite the few fun moments, I really hope the series picks up next week, because if this is going to continue, I’d rather we just have Agent Carter back.
