Marvel’s Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver Were Never Mutants?

The real parentage of the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver is as confusing as the battle between Fox and the MCU over these fictional characters. Are the twins mutants like their father Magneto, which was also referred to in X-Men: Days of Future Past, or are they experimented beings as shown in Avengers: Age of Ultron? Let’s find out!

Marvel teased Wanda and Pietro’s relationship with Magneto back in Avengers & X-Men: Axis #7. After having her personality inverted, Wanda went to attack Magneto. She yelled to have her family struck down, and it was revealed that the twins weren’t related to Magneto at all.

I love how confused Quicksilver looks in one of the panels, because as far as comic books are concerned, nothing can be thought of as 100% the ‘truth’. It’s normal to have character backstories changed depending on the team of writers and editors working on a comic book series.

The question that arises here is why did Marvel decide to make such a change and why now? Did the company want the twin’s origins to be similar to their Age of Ultron counterparts? Or did they do it to make Fox’s Quicksilver look false? My guess is as good as yours.

Having Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch not being Magneto’s children or even mutants doesn’t make sense if House of M is to be considered. If the two weren’t mutants to begin with, then why did Quicksilver lose his powers?

Maybe it was Scarlet Witch herself who used her powers of probability manipulation to sever bonds with Magneto when she cursed to destroy the family tree in Axis #7?

As far as I’m concerned, Magneto needs to forget about the twins for the time being and reconnect with his other daughter Lorna/Polaris. The twins can come back to him once the paternity issue is sorted out.

What do you think of Marvel changing Wanda and Pietro’s origins yet again? Do you think it even matters now that the Marvel Universe has come to an end due to Secret Wars? Let us know!
