Maze Runner: Origins comic book (Maze Runner: The Death Cure Blu-ray, 4K Ultra HD, DVD release)

The Maze Runner: The Death Cure Blu-ray, 4K Ultra HD, DVD, and Digital Combo Pack has a lot of extra content for fans of the franchise to enjoy. Not only do you get tons of bonus scenes, you also get a 24-page comic book!

I was provided a copy of Maze Runner: The Death Cure Combo Pack for review. The Opinions are my own.

While it didn’t make me want to read the books by James Dashner, I enjoyed watching the live-action adaptation of the Maze Runner franchise. Dylan O’Brien being a likeable lead also helped. The Death Cure serves as the final chapter of the trilogy.

Released on January 28, 2018, in the U.S. it was able to gross (as of writing this) $284.8 million at the box office on a $62 million production budget. The film was released on Digital on April 10. It got a Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD release today (courtesy of Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment).

Here’s the official synopsis:

In the epic conclusion to the MAZE RUNNER saga, Thomas leads his group of escaped Gladers on their final mission. To save their friends, they must break into the legendary Last City, a WCKD-controlled labyrinth that may turn out to be the deadliest maze of all! Anyone who makes it out alive will get answers to the questions the Gladers have been asking since they first arrived in the maze.

I did a video review of Maze Runner: The Death Cure. Check it out!

I enjoyed the production value and the character development we got. However, I would’ve done without a few scenes that made the film drag a bit. Overall, it did bring the trilogy to a satisfying close.

Moving on to the Maze Runner: The Death Cure Combo Pack, it comes in a standard slipcover. On the front of the cover, you have the main title art. At the bottom, it tells you about the 24-page comic book and how you can access stickers via Snapchat. The discs are in a standard plastic case, with the main art at the front and a list of extra features detailed on the back.

The comic book is inside the plastic case. So, don’t worry about the retailer forgetting to hand it over to you. There’s also a Digital Movies Anywhere code inside. I was surprised to see an advertisement (a small flyer) for Children of Blood and Bone, though.

The prequel Maze Runner: Origins comic book is quite small in size. It’s written by T.S. Nowlin and Eric Carrasco. The illustrations are by Kendall Goode with Joana Lafuente handling the colors. Published by Boom! Studios, it made for a fun read and is something I think collectors will like to have.

I’m not a Snapchat fan. However, you can get an idea about the film-themed stickers by following the #MazeRunnerSnapHunt on Twitter.

As far as The Death Cure Blu-ray Como Pack details are concerned, the Blu-ray’s 2.39:1 screen format offered clear video presentation. I suggest you watch the film on Blu-ray, especially for the scenes set at nighttime. Director Wes Ball did an amazing job with the production design, and you should watch it in all its glory. Also, I don’t want to say this, but yes, you can make out all of Dylan O’Brien’s moles (or at least most of them) on the Blu-ray presentation, if you’re into doing such a thing. Who am I to judge? Ha!

The 4K Ultra version delivers a similar visual presentation.

Furthermore, the Blu-ray’s English DTS-HD-MA 7.1, ensured clear audio presentation. I didn’t experience any problems with background noise or dialogue delivery.

Here’s the list of special features:

  • The Final Run – This is a featurette that includes interviews, set footage, discussions about the Maze Runner trilogy and the story of the final chapter.
  • Allies Reunited – A fun little extra about the bond shared by the cast.
  • Commentary by Wes Ball, T.S. Nowlin, and Joe Hartwick Jr.  I’m a fan of audio commentaries by the cast and crew. And while this extra content was okay, I was hoping for more.
  • 11 deleted and extended scenes – This also includes optional commentary by Wes Ball, T.S. Nowlin, and Joe Hartwick Jr. The deleted and extended scenes are okay. I wanted the current 144 runtime to be cut even short. So, I can’t really complain about some of the deleted scenes not being added in the final version of the film.
  • 2 Maze Runner: The Death Cure trailers
  • Image Gallery
  • Visual effects breakdowns and reel
  • An 11 and a half minute gag reel – Who doesn’t enjoy seeing Dylan O’Brien goofing around on set, right?
  • Going Out On Top – Covers the opening sequence.
  • Dystopia: The Completed World – A look at the film’s settings, sets, and location shooting.
  • A Look Back: The Director’s Journey – A featurette focusing on Wes Ball.

So, should you go ahead and buy the Maze Runner: The Death Cure Blu-ray, 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack? I think you should. You can also buy the trilogy boxset (released today) on Blu-ray and DVD. The boxset, along with the exclusive comic book, also includes an exclusive Maze Runner bandana.

  1. Thanks for sharing this new release with us (even if I’ll have to wait some more weeks in my country), it seems a good edition of the movie, even if for some reasons (maybe also because I haven’t read the books yet) I was more taken with The Hunger Games (probably since it was the first of this kind to become a film saga too).

PS-Besides I’ve heard about Newtmas, I’ve to agree that the two actors shared more chemestry than O’Brien with the actress (Dylan must be used to it after Sterek BTW ha-ha! <3 ;-P): too bad it was just as subtext as usual…what do you think of it? Do you believe that they could have a sort of prequel-spin-off as my friend explained to me? (it seems that the fans asked for it directly to the writer in fact & he was ok with Newtmas, even if it wasn't supposed to be on paper as well..).
