MCU Re-Release “Avengers Endgame: Encore” Wins the Weekend Box Office

Marvel fans helped propel the re-release of Avengers Endgame to the top of the weekend box office, showcasing the hype around the upcoming Avengers Doomsday.

To be fair, Avengers Endgame: Encore did feature some additional content to help link the film more closely to the events of the upcoming Avengers Doomsday. But still, it’s kind of a bummer that a re-release of a 2019 movie was able to beat three major new releases, especially the enjoyable animated flick Forgotten Island.

Avengers Endgame: Encore cemented itself at the top of the domestic box office with an estimated $26 million. As for the couple of minutes of additional footage, without giving any spoilers, I just found it funny that the MCU creatives had to do a “patch note” version of extra content to link Avengers Endgame to Avengers Doomsday instead of effectively building toward that particular event through the handful of live-action MCU movies that were released between the two Avengers movies.

The entire thing feels like Kevin Feige pushing the “reset” button on the current MCU to return to the OG MCU status quo, focusing again on Chris Evans’ Captain America and Robert Downey Jr. as… well, there are theories out there about the reasoning behind him playing Doom.

But hey, numbers don’t lie. Considering the performance of Avengers Endgame: Encore and the mild reception toward Thunderbolts, Fantastic Four, etc., it’s safe to assume that a majority of MCU fans would like to return to the previous roster instead of being asked to champion the new cast of characters.

In second place, we have Resident Evil, with an estimated 61% drop from the debut weekend. Having grossed around $23.3 million, the horror-comedy currently sits at $196.5 million worldwide. The international numbers have been soft, compared to the Milla Jovovich-led RE movies, but still, it can’t be denied that Zack Cregger’s take has revitalized the struggling IP.

Brad Pitt’s Heart of the Beast came in third with an estimated $20 million. Robert Pattinson’s award-play Primetime took fourth place with around $19 million. I didn’t watch either of those two films, and I highly doubt I will.

Unfortunately, Forgotten Island failed to make an impact at the box office. From DreamWorks Animation, the movie was able to collect only $12.8 million during it’s weekend debut against a reported production budget of $80 million. As of writing this post, it has managed to collect a mere $21 million globally. The Rotten Tomatoes 95% Critic and 96% Audience Score do signal toward positive reception on streaming and home releases down the line. But still, I would have liked Forgotten Island to perform a lot better at the box office.

Co-directed and co-written by Joel Crawford and Januel Mercado, Forgotten Island is set during the 1990s in the Philippines. The narrative follows the two leads, best friends Jo and Raissa, as they set off on a fantastical adventure with the memories of their friendship on the line. It’s a heartfelt story about not saving the world, but about protecting why you matter to someone and vice versa.
