Fans of The Hunger Games trilogy and also female-led films have a new reason to celebrate! According to Forbes, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1 is officially the top-grossing film of 2014.

As of January 21st, Mockingjay “surpassed the $333.2 million earned by the Marvel superhero film,” Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, Forbes explained. This is particularly inspiring for fans since Guardians was released during the summer, aka the time when everyone goes to the movies, whereas Mockingjay was released in November.

Furthermore, the financial success of Mockingjay means that 2014 is the second year in a row where a female-led film topped domestic box offices. In 2013, it was The Hunger Games: Catching Fire to be Screen Shot 2015-01-22 at 5.00.25 PMthe top-grossing film of the year, making it the first time film to lead the box offices with a female lead in 40 years, according to BuzzFeed.

It’s also interesting to note that in both 2013 and 2014, it was a Marvel movie that The Hunger Games films surpassed (Marvel’s Iron Man 3 in 2013 and Guardians in 2014).

So I guess we can finally say that yes, people want to watch movies with female protagonists. Yes, women can be a draw to the box office and not because sex sells. Women can hold the success of a film in their hands and prove that they have what it takes to draw in viewers and critical acclaim. I sincerely hope that these past two years hint at a change for the better for women in film.
