As reported by Deadline, the upcoming disaster movie Moonfall from Roland Emmerich has added actors Donald Sutherland and Eme Ikwuakor to the cast. We also got to know about the production budget.

If here for sci-fi movies with PoC castmembers. Moonfall already has Oscar winner Halle Berry as a NASA astronaut-turned-administrator. Ikwuaker will play a high-ranking military official and estranged father to the son he had with Berry’s character.

Donald Sutherland‘s role will have him playing the gatekeeper of NASA’s secret archives. His character will deal with the internal struggle of whether or not to spill the truth about what happened during the Apollo moon landings that took place in the early seventies.

The cast already includes the always welcome Patrick Wilson, Charlie Plummer, Stanley Tucci, and John Bradley. Principal photography has begun in Montreal. Of course, filming is being down under safety protocols due to the current state of the world.

The plot’s about a mysterious force knocking the Moon from orbit and hurtling toward Earth (maybe God got tired of humans? Just kidding!). With only two weeks left before impact and global extinction, a ragtag team will need to launch into space, land on the Moon, and try to figure out how to save the planet.

According to what Deadline reported, Moonfall is being considered an independent film with a budget of more than $120 million. Emmerich has a history of showing Earth getting destroyed and people running for dear life. So, I’m looking forward to seeing what he will do in Moonfall with that amount of money to play with. The film has been co-scripted with Emmerich’s 2012 co-writer Harald Kloser, and Spenser Cohen.

Apparently, there was a high-profile sales launch at Cannes 2019 and the project sold out worldwide. Lionsgate acquired North American rights. Moonfall is currently scheduled to be released sometime in 2022.

I will continue to keep an eye on this project.
