Freeform announced today at their Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour that the highly-anticipated series Motherland: Fort Salem will premiere Wednesday, March 18. They also released a new trailer and art for the series.

Motherland: Fort Salem is set in an alternate present, an America where witches exist and ended their persecution 300 years ago by striking a deal with the fledgling US government to fight for their country. The ten-episode, one-hour drama follows three young witches from basic training to deployment in this world where traditional gender and power roles are flipped. Women are on the front lines fighting terrorist threats that are remarkably similar to our own world, just with supernatural weapons instead of normal ones.

MOTHERLAND: FORT SALEM – Set in an alternate, present-day America where witches ended their persecution 300 years ago by cutting a deal with the burgeoning U.S. government to fight for their country, “Motherland: Fort Salem” follows three young women from basic training in combat magic into terrifying and thrilling early deployment. From the press release, a look at the fearsome ladies who make up the main cast:

Taylor Hickson (“Deadly Class”) portrays Raelle, a reluctant recruit with major authority issues whose mother recently died in the line of duty. Jessica Sutton (“The Kissing Booth”) is Tally, a kind, strong-willed and curious witch who enlisted despite her mother’s passionate disapproval. Ashley Nicole Williams plays Abigail, an unquestionably alpha, smart, driven and courageous witch who hails from the upper echelons of military witch society and is excited to be joining the ranks of the witches’ army. Amalia Holm (“Playground”) rounds out the young witch recruits playing Scylla, a playful yet dark and mischievous recruit who is not what she appears to be. Demetria McKinney (“The Saints and Sinners”) plays Anacostia, a tough but wryly humorous drill sergeant whose chief concern is keeping the young recruits alive through basic training. Lyne Renee (“Deep State”) recurs as General Sarah Alder, the highest-ranking officer in the Armed Forces and the only leader the witches have ever known.

I’m really excited about this series! We’ve had our eye on this show since news about it first broke last year. Because, honestly, when you watch that trailer, what’s not to love?

It’s got magic, women in positions of power, queer representation, a diverse cast… Freeform has really been excelling at quality programming lately. And it’s nice to see a show that poses “what if?” that’s not about World War II.

Motherland: Fort Salem was written and created by Eliot Laurence (Claws) and produced by Freeform Studios, Gary Sanchez Productions (Vice), and Hyperobjects Industries, a new multiplatform company from Adam McKay. Laurence, McKay, Will Ferrell, Kevin Messick, Maria Maggenti and Steven Adelson serve as executive producers on the series. Adelson also directed the pilot episode.

Motherland: Fort Salem premieres Wednesday, March 18 at 9:00pm EDT/PDT on Freeform.

Are you ready?
