New Avengers #6 Review: Happy Ever After

New Avengers Issue 6

New Avengers #6 brought the Moridun arc to a very satisfying conclusion. Wiccan saved the Marvel Universe again, and looked cool doing it!

Even though I still don’t know how the current New Avengers roster came into being, I’ve been greatly enjoying the series. There’s a lot of focus on Wiccan and Hulkling in the story, and I love it! Let’s hope the trend continues, because we all know that’s the best thing this series has to offer.

With the Avengers from the future coming to the present, we got some interesting tidbits about possible events that might occur. Danielle Cage, the daughter of Luke Cage and Jessica Jones, becomes Captain America, while Songbird has a daughter who goes by the name Marvel Woman. There was also a mention about Eternity Wars. I don’t know what kind of a war it is going to be, but I’m excited, especially if it is related to making Teddy the official King of Space.

New Avengers 006-018While the future Avengers did their best to take down the present possessed Billy, it was ultimately Wiccan himself who defeated Moridun. Billy Kaplan has always been a character who’s been unsure of himself. He has the power to rewrite the very fabric of reality, but that doesn’t mean he can’t feel anxious at times. Understanding that doubting yourself and having bad thoughts, as long as they don’t control you every day, is what allowed Billy to defeat Moridun.

I enjoyed Squirrel Girl’s comment about Moridun being cute and creepy when Billy threw him out. Doreen Green is one of the best characters created by Marvel, and having her as a member of the New Avengers makes for some comedic panels. But again, I have no idea how these characters came together in the first place.

In the end, the future timeline changed and we saw Teddy at home with Billy. Even though it is obvious those two are going to marry each other, it was still exciting to see them all grown up and being the proud parents of a daughter.

With the current arc concluding, I’m looking forward to seeing what Al Ewing has in store for our young heroes in upcoming issues. Also, fingers crossed we get a change of artist soon. I really liked the art in the panels done by Phil Noto that showed Billy fighting Moridun in his mind. Artist Mark Bagley did the panels showing the future versions of Billy and Teddy in their house. Both artists made me recall how out of place Gerardo Sandoval’s art feels in this series. He makes everyone look like buffed-up anime characters – and not in a good way.

Issue Highlights:

  • Hints about a possible future for the current New Avengers.
  • Billy taking out Moridun by himself and saving the Marvel Universe.
  • Billy and Teddy all grown up and living a life of domestic bliss.
